Medical Office Procedures Certificate


Medical Coding Certificate:
The Medical Coding Certificate program provides you with the necessary skills and core concepts to allow you to seek entry-level coding positions in a variety of healthcare facilities, including hospitals, outpatient facilities, physicians' offices, nursing facilities, home healthcare, and hospices.

You may also elect to sit for certification examinations offered by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC–www.aapc.com) and/or the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA–www.ahima.org), once the respective organization’s examination criteria is met. Practical experience and a strong aptitude in this field are recommended prior to sitting for these certification exams.

The Medical Coding Certificate is offered via traditional classroom instruction and/or in an online course format. Students can choose to complete the program by selecting online or traditional course delivery or any combination of online and traditional courses. Please visit us http://online.durhamtech.edu to obtain approval for enrolling in the online Medical Coding instruction. Students must successfully complete five courses, plus one elective, from the list below, in order to receive this certificate.

The recommended course sequence follows:

  • Expanded Medical Terminology for the Health Care Professional              (also available as a printable chart)
  • Anatomy and Physiology for the Medical Office Professional
  • Medical Coding I
  • Medical Coding II
  • Medical Insurance and Billing
  • Elective (required)

If you are interested in taking any of the above courses online, please fill out a permission request form prior to registering.

Electives for the Medical Coding Certificate:
Students may select from the following online/classroom courses to fulfill the required elective for this certificate:

  • Advanced Coding
  • AHIMA Medical Coding Boot Camp
  • Chart Analysis for Medical Professionals
  • NEW! Online Introduction to Medical Coding
  • Medical Law
  • Medical Records Management
Medical Office Procedures Certificate

The Medical Office Procedures Certificate emphasizes the principles of working in a healthcare office or hospital setting and assists the student in obtaining skills used in entry-level healthcare positions such as receptionist, file clerk, or unit coordinator. Students gain experience in understanding medical law and ethics, utilizing effective oral and written communication, and managing office procedures, including appointment scheduling, patient reception and registration, medical records, medical billing, health insurance, and business operations. Students utilize MS Word, the Internet, telephone, and email during the program. Students must successfully complete five courses, plus one elective, from the list below, in order to receive a certificate.

The recommended course sequence follows:

  • Expanded Keyboarding;
  • Expanded Medical Terminology for Healthcare Professionals;
  • Medical Records Management;
  • Medical Insurance and Billing;
  • Medical Law; and
  • Elective (required)

Electives for the Medical Office Procedures Certificate:
Students may select from the following online/classroom courses to fulfill the required elective for the certificate:

  • Anatomy and Physiology for the Medical Office Professional
  • Business Communications for the Medical Office
  • Introduction to Payroll for the Medical Office
  • Microsoft Word
  • Medical Office Environment

 

Students must receive approval to register for any online course. The online approval process has been set up to ensure basic student computer competency/Internet accessibility. You must have access to a computer with Internet connectivity and an active email address to take any online courses.
