This program is for students who want to earn their adult high school diploma. While most classes are taught in a traditional setting, some classes are offered online. Students are required to complete 20 units of credit, including 6 electives, and pass the required North Carolina competency tests. Units satisfactorily completed in high school prior to enrolling at Durham Tech may count toward the required 20 units. Regular class participation, whether traditional or online, is required for this program.

Main-Campus: All classes are held at the Basic Skills Center, 1628 Lawson Street

Admission, Placement, and Enrollment into ABE, AHSD, and GED Classes
Durham Tech – Prospective students entering ABE, AHSD, and GED classes must attend a structured orientation that consists of a series of workshops. Daytime workshops are held Mondays – Fridays from 9 am –noon. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and bring a picture I.D. and social security number to the first workshop. All workshops must be attended before registering for classes. Placement testing is included as part of the orientation process. For more information about day and/or evening workshops, times, and locations, call 919-536-7218 ext. 3003.

Chapel Hill – Placement testing is administered at 9 am on the following Friday mornings: Aug. 29; Sept. 12, 26; Oct. 10, 24; Nov. 7, 21 and Dec. 5 at the Orange County Skills Development Center, 503 W. Franklin Street, Chapel Hill. No appointment is needed to take the placement test; however, testing is given on a “first-come, first-served” basis. A picture I.D. and social security number are required.

Hillsborough – Placement testing is administered at 9 am on the following Friday mornings: Aug. 22; Sept. 5; Oct. 3, 31; Nov. 14 and Dec. 5 at the new Orange County Campus, 525 College Park Drive, Hillsborough.

No appointment is needed to take the placement test; however, testing is given on a “first-come, firstserved” basis. A picture I.D. and Social Security number is required.

Enrollment for ABE and GED classes is permitted throughout the semester, based on space availability. Registration for AHSD courses is held in the Basic Skills Center. Attendance of the course during the first two days of the session is required to confirm the student’s enrollment.

Students successfully completing AHSD and GED programs may participate in Durham Tech’s annual commencement exercises held each May.
