American Sign Language, Beginning – $59

Learn approximately 300 signs and converse on a basic level with a hearing impaired person. This course provides an introduction to the deaf culture in America. This course has been approved by Durham Public Schools for license renewal credit. Textbook may be required. 20 hours. 2.0 TRCs.

American Sign Language, Intermediate I – $59

In this continuation of Intermediate Sign Language, students continue to develop interpreting/signing skills. Grammar is emphasized and new vocabulary is introduced. This course has been approved by Durham Public Schools for license renewal credit. Textbook may be required. 17.5 hours. 1.75 TRCs.

Creative Writing and Imagination – $59

Writing is an act of imagination; it builds from the raw materials of life experience and encounters with language. In this class, students learn to approach creative writing as a playful, meticulous craft by studying the techniques and processes utilized by a wide variety of writers. This course has been approved by Durham Public Schools for license renewal credit. 30 hours. 3 TRCs.

Introduction to Grant Writing – $59

This course provides an overview of the grant writing process, including grants versus contracts; the role of educational, governmental, and non-profit organizations in the grant process; information on available grant organizations; and use of the Internet in the grant process. Learn the grant process from initial identification of grant organizations to the request for solicitations and applications, application requirements, negotiated awards, grant administration, and finally to grant close out. After the overview, each student pursues a grant opportunity following the process utilized in class and is able to submit a grant application tailored toward the student’s personal or professional goals. Familiarity with the Internet recommended. 30 hours.

Public Speaking for Professionals – $59

Get the “jitters” when speaking in front of a group? This class is deigned to familiarize students in a wide variety of business and daily-life situations. Learn to organize effectively, create speaking outlines, challenge nervousness, and communicate a message to your audience appropriately. Develop the confidence to deliver polished presentations anywhere! 36 hours.

Writing Skills for the Work Environment – $64

Learn to integrate basic written English concepts with the demands of today’s work environment. Develop and strengthen writing skills required to communicate in today’s work force, using documents such as, reports, newsletters, procedure manuals, proposals, résumés, and other forms of business communications. Emphasis is on developing the student’s writing style, organizing information, and producing professional documents. In addition, students are also evaluated on principles of writing, editing, and critiquing formal and informal documents. 36 hours.
