The GED diploma is the legal equivalent of a traditional high school diploma and serves the same purpose in meeting most college admission and job requirements. Students may take courses to prepare for the battery of Official GED Tests (reading, social studies, science, math and writing).

Classes are offered in traditional and lab settings as well as online. In some settings, students are able to work at their own pace. Students must pay a one-time $7.50 fee before taking the GED tests.

Admission, Placement, and Enrollment into GED Classes
Durham Tech – Prospective students entering GED classes must attend a structured orientation that consists of a series of workshops. Daytime workshops are held Mondays – Fridays from 9 am –noon. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and bring a picture I.D. and social security number to the first workshop. All workshops must be attended before registering for classes. Placement testing is included as part of the orientation process. For more information about day and/or evening workshops, times, and locations, call 919-536-7218 ext. 3003.

Chapel Hill – Placement testing is administered at 9 a.m. on the following Friday mornings: Sept. , 26; Oct. 10, 24; Nov. 7, 21 and Dec. 5 at the Orange County Skills Development Center, 503 W. Franklin Street, Chapel Hill. No appointment is needed to take the placement test; however, testing is given on a “first-come, first-served” basis. A picture I.D. and social security number are required.

Hillsborough – Placement testing is administered at 9 a.. on the following Friday mornings: Oct. 3, 31; Nov. 14 and Dec. 5 at the new Orange County Campus, 525 College Park Drive, Hillsborough.

GED testing is by appointment only. Call 919-536-7218, ext. 3105 to schedule an appointment. A picture I.D. and Social Security number is required.

Enrollment for GED classes is permitted throughout the semester, based on space availability. Students successfully completing the GED program may participate in Durham Tech’s annual commencement exercises held each May.

All examinees must have an endorsed GED Referral Form at each testing session.

GED Testing Program
Durham Tech is approved by the N.C. State Board of Community Colleges and the American Council on Education as a testing center for the administration of the General Educational Development Test Battery. The college's GED Testing Center also accommodates candidates with disabilities.

Registration is open until each class meets its maximum enrollment.

GED Online
Durham Tech now offers GED Online Instruction FREE to persons who cannot otherwise attend regular on-campus classes for lack of child care, transportation, illness, or job schedule conflicts. This Internet class is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Qualified students may prepare for the GED test from the comfort of their homes. Eligible students must read on a ninth grade level, have access to computer (which meets required standards) have Internet access, possess the ability to work independently, and attend an orientation session.
