Did you know that rain barrels conserve water and help lower costs? One rain barrel can save approximately
1,300 gallons of water during peak summer months. Did you know that rain barrels reduce water pollution
by reducing stormwater runoff, which can contain pollutants like sediment, oil, grease, bacteria, and nutrients?
Rain barrels can be used to save water for plants during dry periods. They can also be arranged to
slowly release the collected rainfall to areas that can soak up the water, reducing stormwater runoff and
increasing groundwater recharge. This workshop teaches you how to make your own rain barrel. Barrels
and supplies are included in the tuition. You may bring your own paint to design your barrel to be a
decorative accessory for your yard or garden! (Because this course is self-supporting, no tuition waivers or
exemptions are allowed.) 3 hours.

Composting is a natural biological process in which bacteria, fungi, and other organisms decompose organic
materials such as leaves, grass clippings, and food wastes. The end product is called compost. This workshop is
designed for students to build a wood and wire two-bin turning composting unit. This type of unit can be used
to quickly compost large amounts of yard, garden, and kitchen wastes. Wood, wire, and tools are included in
the tuition; however, students are responsible for their own safety glasses, work gloves, and ear protection. (Because
this course is self-supporting, no tuition waivers or exemptions are allowed.) 4 hours.

This course gives students a basic understanding of the terms and operational aspects of a photovoltaic (PV)
system. Students are prepared to take the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP)
PV entry-level exam and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) exam. These entry-level
certificates illustrate an understanding of the terms and operational aspects of PV systems to potential
employers. Photovoltaic Design and Installation Manual by Solar Energy International is the required
textbook.
