BioPharma/Biowork
BioWork – $159

The BioWork course trains process technicians for careers in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and chemical manufacturing. This introductory course brings together the basics of manufacturing technology, the fundamentalsof science, and the job-seeking essentials needed to provide marketable skills for manufacturingtechnicians in the Biotechnology field. BioPharma 2: BioTechniques in Biotechnology – $94

This course is an introduction to molecular biology and recombinant DNA techniques and methods. Topics include media preparation, agarose gel electrophoresis, restriction enzyme digestion, transformation of cells, purification and analysis of DNA, PCR, and Southern blotting. Laboratory exercises also reinforce scientificmethod, lab safety, importance of laboratory notebooks, applied problem solving, and fundamentalsof instrumentation. Textbook required. N.C. Heating/Mechanical Contractor’s License Renewal – $54

This course meets the requirements of the N.C. Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating, and Fire Sprinkler Contractors for six contact hours of continuing education credit. Three individual two-hour seminars covering the N.C. Mechanical Code with amendments are offered. Session I covers Chapters 1–5. Session II covers Chapters 6–10. Session III covers approved Fuel Gas Code Changes. Participants may attend only the seminars they need to satisfy individual requirements. The Code book is required. (Because this course is self-supporting, no tuition waivers or exemptions are allowed.) 6 hours.

Career Paths/Occupational Training
Bartending/Mixology – $64

Become a bartender or become a better bartender. Gain mastery in drink mixing procedures and techniques, garnishing, recipes, product usage, sanitation, bar set-up, customer service, etiquette, résumé preparation, and ABC laws and regulations. Open to beginners and existing bartenders wanting to upgrade their skills. Job opportunities are discussed, and each participant compiles a recipe file. Appropriate tools are utilized; however, colored water is used in class. Applicants must be 21 years of age. Textbook, 3" x 5" cards, and cardholder required. 30 hours.

American Sign Language, Beginning – $59

Learn approximately 300 signs and converse on a basic level with a hearing impaired person. This course provides an introduction to the deaf culture in America. This course has been approved by Durham Public Schools for license renewal credit. Textbook may be required. 20 hours. 2.0 TRCs.

American Sign Language, Intermediate I – $59

In this continuation of Intermediate Sign Language, students continue to develop interpreting/signing skills. Grammar is emphasized and new vocabulary is introduced. This course has been approved by Durham Public Schools for license renewal credit. Textbook may be required. 17.5 hours. 1.75 TRCs.

Creative Writing and Imagination – $59

Writing is an act of imagination; it builds from the raw materials of life experience and encounters with language. In this class, students learn to approach creative writing as a playful, meticulous craft by studying the techniques and processes utilized by a wide variety of writers. This course has been approved by Durham Public Schools for license renewal credit. Teachers may present their certificate (from the class) to DPS to obtain the license renewal credit. Teachers from other public schools should contact the appropriate staff development person in their system to obtain approval to take this course for license renewal credit. 30 hours. 3 TRCs.

Emergency Medical Services
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic Training – $111.35
(Exempt for qualified participants*)

This course takes those with little or no medical experience and introduces them to emergency care. At the end of the course, students are competent in providing emergency care at the basic level to patients needing care. All classes require Saturdays. The schedule is provided on the first day of class. Requirements are 18 years of age or older and a high school diploma or equivalent. Registration is $65 unless exempt. A supply fee of $25, a CAPS fee of $4, and an insurance fee of $17.35 are required and are not exempt. Summer class includes nine Saturdays. Preregistration and textbooks required. Spanish Language Courses, Beginning Levels I-IV
Arabic, Beginning I – $59

Learn Spanish at Durham Technical Community College. The Continuing Education Division offers classes in four levels of Beginning Spanish. These levels become progressively more advanced, building on the skills learned from the prior course. Spanish I and II are designed for students with no or little previous exposure to the Spanish language. Spanish III and IV are more advanced and help better prepare you for the specialized or intermediate-level course. These courses allow you to gain the fundamentals necessary to pursue further Spanish study. Textbook required. Each class is 25 hours. 2.5 TRCs.

Health, Wellness, and Fitness
Beginning Lindy Hop! – $59

This course continues to develop students’ social swing dancing. We will cover classic moves from 1930’s Lindy Hop, the original swing dance which developed from Charleston. Students are required to attend two dances during the semester. Please wear comfortable shoes. Some partnered dance experience is strongly required. (Because this course is self-supporting, no tuition waivers or exemptions are allowed. Additional expenses may be incurred.) 12 hours.

Computer Basics for the Job Search – $65
(FREE to qualified participants)

This course provides a stress-free introduction to the technology and computer skills you need in today’s business world. Learn to create letters and résumés and discover what computer terms mean. Special emphasis is on using the Internet to search for jobs, evaluate opportunities, and apply for positions online. 39 hours.

Clerical Assistant for Health Careers – $65

Develop the fundamental skills required to be effective in health care offices while exploring careers in the fast growing health care field from CNA, medical transcription, nursing, pharmacy tech, phlebotomy, to physical and occupational therapy, and beyond. Interviewing skills and résumé preparation guidance are included. Seats are limited to the first 14 participants. 60 hours.

Personal Enrichment
Basic Upholstery – $59

This course covers the basics of furniture upholstery and is for those with basic sewing skills. Students learn about fabrics and how to cover chairs, cushions, footstools, and small sofas. Cost of materials depends on the chosen project. 27 hours.

Beginning Calligraphy – $59

Students learn the Italic style of calligraphy. This course is for the absolute beginner or those with previous experience seeking to refresh their skills. The only requirements are a desire to work in this medium and a calligraphy pen with three nibs. 16 hours.
