Enrolling in a credit course at Durham Tech?
If you are new to Durham Tech, these are the steps you will take to enroll in college courses.
Attend an orientation. Start with an orientation session to understand how Durham Tech can help you reach your goals. At this session, you will complete your enrollment application and develop an individualized checklist of the steps necessary to complete your enrollment. Need more information, call 919-536-7207.
Complete the paperwork.
- Enrollment Application If you wish to enroll in college-level courses, you must
complete an enrollment application before you can be advised and register for courses. Applications are available in the Admissions Office or online in the admissions section.
You can complete your application in one of two ways. If you attend an orientation
session (see above), your application will be processed the same day you attend the
orientation. Or, you can submit an application to the Admissions Office. Applications submitted through the Admissions Office will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Processing time may take up to three weeks during busy periods. Need more information, call 919-536-7202.
- Financial Aid Application If you are interested in applying for financial aid, complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Please allow five weeks for processing. Financial Aid is not available to visiting students. It is only available
for eligible students who complete the full admissions process to a college degree, diploma, or certificate program. Need more information, call 919-536-7209.
- Transcript Request Form If you plan to pursue a degree, diploma or certificate, request an official transcript showing a graduation date (high school, adult high school, GED, or college). Also, request official college transcripts if you desire an evaluation for transfer credit. All official transcripts should be mailed from your school directly to Durham Tech’s Admissions Office.
If you plan to take courses as a visiting student and you have already taken credit courses at another college, request a personal copy unofficial college transcript(s). You will bring these transcripts to advising to document completion of course prerequisites. IMPORTANT: If you cannot provide transcripts, you will be unable to enroll in courses with prerequisites. Need more information, call 919-536-7202.
Take the placement test.
In order to enroll in most courses, you will be required to take the placement test. Visit the Testing Center section for tips on how to prepare for this important test and to see the current test schedule.
If you can document completion of college-level writing or mathematics courses, you may be exempt from the placement test. However, some limited-number health
programs require ALL students to take the placement test. Need more information, call 919-536-7210.
See an advisor.
Once you have completed the placement step, you are ready to select courses for your first semester. To register for courses, you must meet with an advisor.
If you complete the process to be admitted to a degree, diploma, or certificate program, you will be assigned an academic advisor. After receiving your notice of acceptance, you will receive a letter with your advisor’s information and directions for how to schedule your advising appointment.
If you are a visiting student, call the Advising Center at 919-536-7205 to schedule an appointment. Advising Center appointments are limited and fill up fast. Need more information, call 919-536-7205.

My goal is to complete a program at Durham Tech. How do I contact my advisor?
If you have been officially admitted into a Durham Tech program you will receive a
letter in the mail with your advisor’s name, telephone number, office location, and email address. You can contact your advisor directly.

Each student should create a file of important papers. In your file, include a copy of your admission’s notice (if you are enrolled an a program), your placement test scores, and any previous college transcripts you might have that would indicate possible transfer credit. Unofficial copies of transcripts are acceptable for advising purposes. It’s essential to bring your own documentation to every advising appointment to ensure you can enroll in appropriate courses.
How do I know if a course is available?
Take time prior to meeting with your advisor to review the course schedule and courses that might be closed by reviewing the schedule and visiting the closed class list.
