Job Title:

Information Systems Security and Networking Technologies Instructor, Information Systems Technologies Department

Reports to:

Program Director, Networking Technologies and Information Systems Security

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Instructor for the responsible for teaching courses in the program and working with the program director and other program faculty to plan, implement, coordinate, and evaluate instruction. The instructor is responsible for the following duties:

Instructional Responsibilities

  1. Teach assigned courses as determined by the terms of the employment contract, the program director's semester staffing plans, program-specific needs, the general needs of the college, and the current teaching load guidelines.
  2. Provide quality instruction at all times, teaching classes for the entire class period, and properly covering course materials and competencies as specified in course outlines.
  3. Provide academic advisement for students taking courses in the program as determined and assigned by the program director and/or the department head.
  4. Maintain professional awareness and currency of important Networking and Security issues, incorporating them into instruction in a manner consistent with course outlines and the plan of study.
  5. Use various instructional, computer, and distance learning technologies (e.g., Blackboard) to provide contemporary presentation of course material.
  6. Teach assigned courses with special attention to the college's mission, its commitment to the open door philosophy, and student success.

Program Responsibilities

  1. Assist the program director in planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating the program's institutional effectiveness objectives, as requested.
  2. Implement and enforce, when appropriate, college academic policies and procedures together with administrative rules and regulations and other controls intended to maintain order and the highest standards of instruction.
  3. Maintain effective communications with the program director and other program faculty by attending regular meetings, by timely written communications, and by other means as requested.
  4. Maintain a 40 hour weekly work schedule designed to ensure the completion of all teaching, advisement, and college responsibilities.
  5. Maintain and process all office records, grade and enrollment reports, forms, schedules, and other paperwork in a timely and efficient manner, checking for the correctness and accuracy of all data.
  6. Attend Advisory Committee meetings and program meetings, as requested.
  7. Assist the program director in reviewing and evaluating the program, as requested.
  8. Recommend to the program director appropriate changes in the plan of study, course outlines, texts, lab supplies, equipment, and other program materials.
  9. Assist the program director in ensuring that the program is in full compliance with any requirements for accreditation, certification, and other standards stipulated by external agencies.
  10. Assist the program director in preparing a semester or annual master schedule of course offerings and class schedules which meet the requirements of the program and the needs of students, ensuring that the instructional resources of the college are being effectively utilized.
  11. Make recommendations to the program director concerning program needs for full-time and part-time personnel.

Institutional and External Responsibilities

  1. Maintain effective, collaborative, and productive relations at all times with all other units of the department, the division, and the college.
  2. Maintain effective and productive relations with Network training and certification authorities.
  3. Collaborate with and provide appropriate support to Student Services personnel in conducting student advising and registration, new student orientations, job placement, recruitment, and other related activities.
  4. Attend department, division, and college meetings, as requested.
  5. Assume other responsibilities and perform additional tasks as assigned by the program director, department head, Chief Instructional Officer, or President.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  1. An Associate degree in Information Systems Security, Networking Technologies, or related field.
  2. Two years of full-time work experience in IT security, systems administration, or network management.
  3. Certification and/or 2 years prior experience in Linux administration and networking (Novell SuSE preferred.)
  4. Certification and/or experience in at least one of the following: Microsoft Windows, Cisco, CompTIA (Network+, Security+), ISC2, GIAC.
  5. Teaching experience and/or CCAI/MCT/CNI/CTT equivalent certification.
  6. A thorough understanding and commitment to the college's mission and philosophy.
  7. Competence in oral and written communication skills necessary for effective teaching.
  8. Competency in using word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and communication programs.
  9. Sensitivity to the needs and expectations of students and colleagues.
  10. Ability to teach students of all abilities and backgrounds.
  11. Desire to motivate each student and help that individual reach his/her potential
  12. Ability to establish and maintain effective and positive interpersonal relations throughout the college and the community.


Normal Work Hours:

The Instructor is required to work a minimum of 40 hours per week according to a 9-month flexible schedule that may include day, evening, and weekend responsibilities and other duties. Work duties and responsibilities may be at the college's main campus, branch campuses, or other locations as assigned. The teaching load for this position is subject to change.
