| The instructor of Compensatory Education is primarily responsible for the planning, delivery of instruction, and providing services and support activities required for optimal learning for adults with developmental disabilities. The instructor is also accountable for monitoring student progress and completing all paperwork required by the program director to meet state and federal demands. More specifically, the duties and responsibilities are as follows:
- Instruct students in academic subjects, using the Compensatory Education Program of Study. The areas within the program of study are math, social science, community living, consumer education, health and vocational education.
- Develop and implement strategies to meet the needs of students in daily living skills required for independent maintenance and self-sufficiency, such as hygiene, safety, food preparation and employing techniques.
- Prepare classrooms for class activities and provide a variety of materials and resources for students to explore, manipulate, and use.
- Use computers, audiovisual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentation.
- Plan and supervise class projects, field trips, visits by guest speakers, or other experiential activities that provide students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
- Develop and implement learning activities that will promote physical, mental, and social development.
- Administer standardized test (CASAS) to determine students’ strengths and areas of need.
- Maintain confidentiality and accuracy of student records; processing reports, forms, and all other required paperwork in a timely, efficient manner.
- Attend professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops in order to maintain and improve professional competence.
- Maintaining proper communication with the program director and fellow colleagues.
- Participates in the evaluation of the instructional process and explores appropriate strategies to make improvements in his/her instruction.
- Provides mentoring to new instructors.
- Assuming other necessary responsibilities and tasks as assigned by the program director to meet the needs of the program.
