| The instructor of Developmental English/Reading is responsible for the planning, delivery and evaluation of classroom instruction and for providing those related services and support activities required for optimal student learning and effective educational programming. As a member of the Developmental Education faculty, the instructor is also accountable for assisting and supporting the Chair and/or department Dean, as needed, in meeting the instructional and curricular requirements of the program, department, and division. More specifically, the instructor is responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:
Instructional Responsibilities:
- Teach all courses, as assigned, for the full duration of scheduled instruction;
- Be fully prepared with instructional plans for each class session and in accord with the stated objectives of the course;
- Be available out of class to students requiring additional assistance and refer them, as needed, to the proper student support services;
- Serve as academic advisor to students as required and as otherwise requested or needed by individual students;
- Maintain professional awareness of important developmental education issues, incorporating them into instruction in a manner consistent with course outlines;
- Use various instructional technologies to provide contemporary presentation of course material;
- Teach assigned courses with special attention to the college’s mission, its commitment to the open door philosophy, and student success;
Program Responsibilities:
- Assist in the revision and development of course outlines, syllabi, curriculum plans, and other instructional documentation required to meet the objectives of the Developmental Education program;
- Enforce academic policies and procedures at all times and comply with all other institutional rules and regulations pertinent to classroom instruction and general employment;
- Assist in the identification, preview and acquisition of needed educational resources, including textbook selection, library materials, laboratory supplies and other instructional provisions;
- Participate in advising/registration activities and assisting in the recruitment of students;
- Participate in program, department, division, and college-wide meetings and other announced activities;
- Maintain office and student records, processing reports, forms, and all other required paperwork in a timely, efficient manner, and checking for the accuracy, correctness and completeness of all data;
- Fulfill committee assignments as requested;
- Maintain posted office hours to accommodate all duties and professional obligations and needs of students;
Institutional and External Responsibilities:
- Maintain effective, collaborative, and productive relations with other units of the college;
- Participate in in-service training and other opportunities for professional development, including attendance at off-campus activities, as feasible, and generally staying abreast of developments in the field;
- Collaborate with and provide appropriate support to Student Services personnel in conducting student advising and registration, new student orientations, recruitment, and other related activities;
- Assume other necessary responsibilities and tasks as assigned by the Chair, department Dean, Chief Instructional Officer, or the President.

| The Developmental English/Reading instructor is required to work a minimum of forty (40) hours per week according to a 9-month flexible schedule, which may include day, evening, and/or weekend responsibilities and duties. Work duties and responsibilities may be at the college’s main campus, branch campuses, or other locations as assigned. The teaching load for this position is subject to change.
