A college education is a major investment. However, it is an investment of time, dedication, and money that will seem small when you calculate the “profits” such an education makes possible.

The Financial Aid Office helps students with grant and scholarship applications. All students receiving financial aid must maintain satisfactory progress in their programs. Federal financial aid recipients (Pell, FSEOG, NCSIG) who withdraw or cease to attend classes before the 60 percent point of the term are required to pay back a portion of their award.

Who is Eligible for Aid?

All students are encouraged to apply for aid. Eligibility is based on:

arrowFinancial need;
arrowThe number of credit hours being taken; and
arrowIn some cases, the program of study in which the student is enrolled.

Sources of Financial Aid

Durham Tech disburses financial aid in the forms of scholarships, grants, and employment opportunities within the college.

A grant is money which does not have to be repaid. A scholarship, which does not have to be repaid, is money awarded under special conditions — usually in recognition of outstanding achievements. Work-study provides the opportunity to work part time in administrative or departmental offices, the library, laboratories, and other sites on or off campus.

Program Eligibility Benefits Applying
Federal Pell Grant
A U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen who has not received a bachelor’s degree; is enrolled in an eligible program; and shows financial need according to the Federal Pell Grant formula. Grants range from $400 to $4,000 per year. Before receiving any Federal Pell Grant funds, selected students must give the Financial Aid office acceptable verification of all taxable and nontaxable income. Students who have all paperwork cleared by the beginning of the semester may be eligible to charge tuition, fees, and books. Students must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The application form is available in the Admissions and Financial Aid offices at Durham Tech and from high school guidance counselors. Durham Tech’s school code is 005448.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant Students are considered for this funding based on student applicants with the lowest Expected Family Contribution (EFC) who have the highest Grade Point Average (GPA) in Durham Tech’s federal applicant pool. The number of students and amounts of the grants awarded are contingent upon Durham Tech’s federal allocation of funds. All students who apply for federal financial aid are automatically considered for an additional FSEOG grant.
North Carolina Student Incentive Grant Grants are available to residents of North Carolina who have not received a bachelor’s degree and who are enrolled full time in an eligible program. Grants range from $200 to $1,500 per year. Complete and mail the Free Application for Federal Student Aid by March 15.
Single Parent Grant Applicants are awarded funding based on need, academic standing, and availability of funds. This program is supported by state childcare funds, the Durham Tech Foundation, and private contributions. Students may apply on a semester basis for assistance with tuition, fees, and books, if they are not eligible for a federal Pell Grant. Students may also apply for day care assistance after completing one semester successfully. Applications are available in June, October, and March for fall, spring and summer semesters, respectively, in the Financial Aid Department.
Nurse Education Scholarship Loan (NESLP) Students enrolled in North Carolina postsecondary institutions that offer nurse education programs which prepare students for licensure as a practical nurse or registered nurse in North Carolina. Awards range from $400 to $5,000. Persons fulfilling employment contracts qualify for loan cancellation. Interested students should contact the Financial Aid office or the nursing program directors. Students who qualify based on need are automatically considered and offered the opportunity to accept an NESLP loan.
Nurse Scholars Program This scholarship is based on academic performance. Typically, one to three students receive the scholarship each year. Interested persons may contact the nursing program directors for more information.
North Carolina Targeted Assistance Grant A limited amount of funding is available to support students who are enrolled in high-demand/low-enrollment programs at Durham Tech. Eligible programs are selected based on job market demands for certain skills and under-enrolled programs that fill those particular needs of local employers. The program at Durham Tech is administered jointly by the Counseling and Student Development staff. Students may apply to become mentors to other students or mentors in the selected programs and receive a scholarship based on completing certain requirements.
Federal Work Study Students who are enrolled at least part time and who have financial need. Work-study involves part-time employment on-campus or off-campus in offices, labs, library, or community service agencies. Complete Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Notify the Financial Aid Office of your interest in the program.

Satisfactory Progress for Financial Aid
Students receiving financial aid must maintain satisfactory academic progress as defined by the Department of Education in the Student Financial Aid Handbook. This handbook is available from the Financial Aid office.
Satisfactory progress is defined as:
1. Maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher;
2. Maintaining a cumulative credit hour completion rate of 67 percent or higher; and
3. Not attempting more than 150 percent of the course hours required for graduation.

When to Apply for Financial Aid

Applications or renewal applications for financial aid must be submitted for each academic year. The FAFSA form is usually available for the upcoming academic year after January 1 at the reception desk or apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Students are encouraged to apply early. Durham Tech's Title IV Code is 005448. The correct Title IV school code must be listed on the application for Durham Tech to be able to electronically access the application information.

Ordinarily, students should apply for financial aid prior to enrolling; however, the FAFSA form may be mailed through April 30 of the academic year in which the student is enrolled, and the completed Student Aid Report must be received by the Financial Aid Office by June 15.

Federal aid may be received retroactively for previous enrollments during the current academic year if the student is otherwise eligible.

Occasionally a student has "special circumstances" that create an uncontrollable and significant negative impact on financial resources (such as the loss of a job, single parent status, etc.) which will change the student's financial status. Any student who has "special circumstances" should discuss their individual situation with a member of the Financial Aid staff.

Initial FAFSA applications are mailed to the central processing center by the student or submitted via the Internet at www.fafsa.ed.gov by the student. If corrections are necessary to the original application, the Financial Aid Office can assist by filing the corrections electronically. Students will receive their student aid report (SAR) in the mail from the U.S. Department of Education, which is a federal agency. The SAR and any supporting documents should be turned in to the Financial Aid Office as soon as possible for award processing.

Important Financial Aid Information for the Fall 2008 Semester

What are the deadlines for Financial Aid?

All Financial Aid files must be completed by July 28 to charge tuition and books for TECHLINE (Telephone) General Registration and by Aug. 7 to charge tuition and books for Late Registration. Start the Financial Aid application process early.

If I'm using financial aid to pay for my classes, how does my bill get paid?

Students with a Pell Grant award will have tuition fees automatically deducted from their account. Students must complete the ENTIRE financial aid process prior to registering for courses or their classes will be dropped. Failure to formally withdraw from classes will result in you owing money back to Durham Tech. Students whose tuition and fees will be paid by other programs or agencies must take their bill to the Business Office on or before the due date. Documents that authorize charging tuition to a third party must be on file with the college before registration charges can be transferred to the sponsoring agency.

What do I need to do to maintain satisfactory progress with Financial Aid?

To maintain satisfactory progress, students receiving financial aid must have an overall 2.0 grade point average (GPA) and have a 67 percent cumulative credit hour completion rate. This information is listed above in the Satisfactory Progress for Financial Aid section.

What happens to my financial aid if I have to withdraw from classes?

Withdrawing from classes negatively impacts the 67 percent satisfactory progress completion rate. Failing to formally withdraw from a class will result in an F2 grade, which negatively impacts satisfactory progress.

Refund Policy for Financial Aid Recipients

Durham Technical Community College applies its fair and equitable refund policy to all students. This institution follows the refund requirements as prescribed by federal regulations. All financial aid recipients who withdraw or cease to attend all classes before the 60 percent point of the term must pay back part of the unearned portion of their reward.

Copies of these policies and sample refund calculations are available in the Financial Aid Office upon request. The Business Office is responsible for accepting and documenting repayments to ensure the return of the refund to the proper agencies. (Students who do not repay the funds are referred to the U.S. Department of Education for collection.)
