We are excited to have you as a member of our community. Durham Tech's mission is to enrich students' lives and the broader community through teaching, learning, and service. The process of academic advising promotes the overall college mission by partnering faculty and staff with students as they work to attain academic and personal goals. Advisors support students as they become proactive in making thoughtful, informed decisions about their education.
What is academic advising?
Connecting with your advisor is important for academic success. Advisors can help you
Assess your interests, abilities, and career goals;
Select the courses required to complete your degree;
Make full use of the resources and facilities at Durham Tech;
Understand college policies and procedures; and
Develop strategies to be successful in the college environment and beyond.
Who is my academic advisor?
New Students – You will learn about the advising process during your ConnectSession, Durham Techs student orientation. After you submit your enrollment application, you should reserve a spot in a ConnectSession.
After attending a ConnectSession, students should meet with an academic advisor during walk-in hours. Beginning the enrollment process early will help you avoid long wait times during walk-in advising and give you access to a wider selection of course options. Academic advisors are specially trained to assist you with course selection for your first semester and with your transition to Durham Tech. You will receive information about the programs, resources, and services available to students. Make the most of your advising meeting and ask questions we're here to help!
New students with 12 or more college-level credits who are exempt from a ConnectSession may schedule an online advising appointment or attend walk-in hours in the Admissions and Enrollment Services Center in the Phail Wynn, Jr. Student Services Center, room 1200 or at Orange County Campus.
Continuing Students – If you are pursuing a degree, diploma, or certificate at Durham Tech, you will be assigned a permanent faculty advisor from your program area during the end of your first semester. Your advisor's name will appear in the My Profile section of WebAdvisor.
Visiting Students – Advising services are available for visiting students through online advising or during walk-in hours in the Admissions and Enrollment Services Center in the Phail Wynn, Jr. Student Services Center, room 1200 or at Orange County Campus.
When do I see my advisor?
You should plan to meet with your assigned advisor each semester prior to registration. It is your responsibility to schedule this appointment or submit a request for online advising. Check the website for important dates and contact your advisor at least two weeks prior to your assigned registration time. During the summer, when faculty advisors are off-contract, returning students may receive advising services in the Admissions and Enrollment Services Center or at Orange County Campus during walk-in hours or participate in online advising. If you are having trouble with your classes or experiencing difficulties adjusting to college, we encourage you to speak with your advisor sooner. Advisors can also be a great resource as you explore career options or make plans to transfer to a four-year institution. Feel free to seek advice from your academic advisor as you face significant educational decisions.
Being prepared will help you make the most of advising.
Check your ConnectMail account regularly for updates from your advisor and other college departments.
Schedule appointments with your advisor in a timely manner and don't be late.
Review your plan of study and think about which classes you would like to take prior to your meeting.
Become familiar with the academic policies and procedures outlined in the College Catalog.
Seek assistance as soon as a problem arises. Do not wait!
