Durham Tech alum Navid Nesab sent the following update:
I am originally from Iran, and I came to the United States six years ago to continue my education. I started at Durham Tech, earning
an Associate in Science degree with highest honors. I transferred to UNC-Chapel Hill in 2012 as a C-STEP student and graduated
with a bachelor’s degree in summer 2014. I was just accepted into the UNC School of Dentistry and will begin my studies in August 2014. After
graduating from dental school, I plan to serve the community that helped me reach my dreams.
While the transition to Carolina was not an easy experience, I was not alone. The C-STEP program helped me to adapt to the new environment and provided me support, like a family. I found it inspiring and fascinating to see other transfer students who come from different backgrounds with such dedication and determination to reach their goals. It has been a great motivation for me.
During my experience at Carolina, I have learned a lot and feel it is my responsibility to share my knowledge to help others succeed. Currently, I am a C-STEP Peer Mentor to three transfer students; I also share my experiences with prospective students through the C-STEP Shadowing Program. I believe that Carolina helps students discover their passions or build upon their existing goals. UNC challenges its students to be resilient and knowledgeable about their fields of study and prepares students for their future career and educational goals. I am so happy and grateful to be a member of the Carolina family, and I will do my best to make my family proud.
