New Loan Applicants at Durham Tech
New loan applicants (Durham Technical Community College students who have never had a Direct Loan) are required to complete the following four steps to be considered for a student loan. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be completed before you can complete these steps.
Step 1: Complete Entrance Counseling
Complete the required Entrance Counseling online at www.studentloans.gov. Entrance Counseling will walk you through the Direct Loan process and explain your rights and responsibilities as a borrower. If you have not previously received a Direct Loan, the Federal Government requires you to complete loan counseling to ensure that you understand the responsibilities and obligations you are assuming.
Step 2: Complete your Electronic Master Promissory Note (eMPN)
Fill out your electronic eMPN online at: www.studentloans.gov. The Electronic Master Promissory Note (eMPN) is a legal document in which you promise to repay your loan(s) and any accrued interest and fees to the U.S. Department of Education. It also explains the terms and conditions of your loan(s).
Step 3: Attend a Loan Entrance Workshop at Durham Tech.
All new borrowers at Durham Tech must attend a one-hour workshop before their loan request can be processed. There are no exceptions. The loan workshop is required even if you have received student loans previously at another college.
