The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Durham County (RSVP) provides opportunities for persons age 55 and over to make a difference in their communities through volunteer service. RSVP volunteers contribute anywhere from one to over forty hours a week, serving nonprofit and public organizations to help meet critical community needs.

RSVP offers maximum flexibility and choice to its volunteers. This federally funded program, sponsored locally by Durham Technical Community College, matches the personal interests and skills of volunteers with opportunities to serve their communities. Supplemental auto liability and accident insurance are offered while on duty. Volunteers receive pre-service orientation and on-the-job training from the agency or organization where they are placed.

RSVP volunteers choose how and where they want to serve. Volunteers provide hundreds of community services, such as the following:

  • Tutoring children in reading and math;
  • Building houses;
  • Modeling parenting skills to teen parents;
  • Participating in neighborhood watch programs;
  • Planting community gardens;
  • Providing counsel to new business owners;
  • Offering relief services to victims of natural disasters; and
  • Helping community organizations operate more efficiently.

Make a difference in Durham by volunteering to help in one of the agencies listed. Contact RSVP at 919-536-7247 extension 5303 or 5301. You can also email rsvpdurhamnc@durhamtech.edu to find out about additional opportunities.
