From the President
Thank you for partnering with the Durham Technical Community College
Foundation! Early in my career, I realized that partnerships and working
with others for the common good are critically important, especially
in educational endeavors. Having served as the president of Durham Technical
Community College since 1980, I have welcomed partnerships with businesses
and industries in the communities we serve as well as with individuals
who care about student success and preparing area residents to succeed
in the workplace. The partnerships that the Durham Technical Community
College Foundation is fortunate to enjoy are helping make dreams come
true for our students through scholarships and additional support services.
Your partnerships with the Foundation are also supporting grants that
strengthen our educational offerings.
In addition, Foundation contributions are providing cultural programs
that are expanding our students’ knowledge outside of the classroom
— and opening their hearts and minds to different views of our
global community.
With over 25,000 persons now attending Durham Tech each year, many of
our students are in dire need of financial assistance to help them succeed
in meeting their educational goals and preparing for well-paying careers.
Contributions to the college’s Foundation often provide the scholarship
funds that make the difference in students staying in college or leaving
to work and make ends meet. But be confident that your contributions
do not stand alone in supporting students and instruction at Durham
Tech because our faculty and staff are committed to taking the extra
step in this partnership effort of ours. We pledge to continue providing
the quality instruction and the personal attention that will make a
difference to our students’ success.
I thank you on behalf of our faculty and staff for being partners in
this effort of making dreams come true for our students. Working together,
we are accomplishing so much more than we could ever accomplish alone
— and our students and our communities will continue to thrive
because of these partnerships.

2005
was another successful year for the Durham Technical Community College
Foundation. Total assets of the Durham Tech Foundation have now surpassed
$2.3 million!
The 2005 Annual Fund Drive raised approximately $425,000 through the
generosity of employees, individuals, civic organizations, small and
large businesses, and local and national grant makers.
The good news continues. Here are a few highlights: A scholarship established
in memory of two beloved Business Technologies Department associate
deans was awarded for the first time. Durham Regional Hospital established
an annual scholarship for Durham Tech nursing students, with the first
recipient selected in the spring.
Throughout 2005, the college leadership emphasized educating our faculty,
staff, trustees, and Foundation directors about the DreamKeepers Emergency
Financial Aid Fund and asked them to designate their annual gifts to
DreamKeepers. Presentations were made during each quarterly Board of
Trustees meeting and each quarterly Foundation Board of Directors meeting
throughout the year. Numerous articles appeared in the campus’
monthly employee newsletter and a PowerPoint presentation was made during
the Fall Faculty/Staff meeting on September 19. The DreamKeepers Emergency
Financial Aid Fund was the focal point of the 2005 Campus Fund Drive.
As a result, the DTCC Foundation raised the maximum $35,000 in required
matching funds and reported the good news to the Scholarship America
funding source in December 2005.
Scholarships and emergency financial aid can mean the difference between
a student staying in school or dropping out. Gifts to the Foundation
mean deserving students have the tuition, technology, and tutoring they
need to help them succeed.
Thank you for your generous support. Through your contributions, Durham
Tech continues to be a gateway to brighter futures and sweeter dreams.
