Ami Macaully grew
up in war-torn Sierra Leone. Her family’s main priority was survival.
Obtaining an education was difficult, at best. When the family escaped to
the United States, she was able to attend Chapel Hill High School. A scholarship
to Durham Tech changed her life. The tragedy of war in her childhood inspired
Macaully to pursue a career in nursing. “I’ve loved working
on every clinical rotation I’ve had,” she said. Armed with a
newly minted Associate Degree in Nursing, she can’t wait to begin
her career helping others. |

Dan Bagachwa took his first Durham
Tech course while a student at Riverside High School through the dual enrollment
program. Impressed with the college, Bagachwa applied to Durham Tech during
his senior year. Because of his accomplishments, he was awarded the Reckhow
Family Scholarship. Despite a busy schedule, Bagachwa found time to help
other students through The Mentor Project. He was also active in the Math
Society. Bagachwa was recently awarded a prestigious President’s Scholarship.
He will study Management Information Technology at N.C. State University.

Eve Stephens worked a series of
low-paying jobs after high school, but she never had a career. “I
came to the realization I needed to go back to school,” she said.
When she decided to enroll at Durham Tech — 16 years after high school
— she was one credit short of graduating from high school. Stephens
took the class she needed through the Adult Education and Basic Skills.
She received a scholarship, helping her bridge from the high school to college
track. She will soon receive an A.A.S. degree in Health Information Technology
and plans to obtain the Clinical Trials Research Associate degree. |

As a student at Chapel Hill High School, Grigoriy
Kuntukov aspired to go to college. But he knew he would be totally
responsible for the cost of his college education. Kuntukov was delighted
to receive an Eisai Scholarship. While enrolled at Durham Tech, he maintained
a high scholastic average and held down a job. He also was awarded the Robert
Lyon Memorial Scholarship and recently received the Durham Tech Retirees
Scholarship. Kuntukov hopes to transfer to N.C. State or the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. |
