Durham Tech Foundation LogoFor years, the Foundation has played a huge role in the success of the college’s Single Parent Program. This important program offers single parent students assistance with tuition, books, and childcare expenses. While most of the program’s childcare funding comes from the State, the remainder of childcare funds, as well as all of the tuition and book assistance, comes from generous private donors, such as Dr. Charles Sanders and Darrell and Susan DeLoatche. In fact, due to recently reduced State funding, all of the program’s summer session assistance is now drawn exclusively from private funds. Without private donations, the Single Parent Program would be significantly diminished, resulting in far fewer single parents who would be able to succeed at Durham Tech.

"No other local institution touches the lives of our friends and neighbors in a more significant way than Durham Technical Community College. My wife, Ann, and I believe in this institution and its students ... especially in those students pursuing educational dreams despite obstacles and difficulties. We have been supporting the Single Parent Program for over 10 years. Our annual gift helps provide child care, tuition, and book stipends for some of the most dedicated and most deserving students at Durham Tech. I see these students as our future nurses, computer programmers, and mechanics and feel honored that any assistance we are able to provide could help change their lives and better our community."

Dr. Charles Sanders
Former Chairman and CEO of Glaxo, Inc.

Gloria CopelandGloria Copeland graduated in May 2004 with a degree in Respiratory Therapy. This 36-year-old is a single mother to her 10-year-old son, Darius.

"The Single Parent Program is essential to achieving my educational goal and my future career in Respiratory Therapy. Without scholarships for child care and tuition, I would not have completed my degree in a timely manner -- or possibly at all. The funding was available when I had no other resources and nowhere to turn. I can truly say that, I, along with others in my situation, can serve as positive role models for our children and others thanks to assistance and support from the Single Parent Program."

"I strongly believe that those who achieve some level of success in life have a moral obligation to help others. The Durham Tech Foundation offers an excellent means to assist members of our community who are trying to better themselves. I view gifts through the Foundation not as mere charitable contributions but as investments in our community. It is so gratifying to see our students become productive and successful citizens."

C. Darrell DeLoatche

Matthew CarterMatthew Carter, 23-year-old single father of 5-year-old Christopher, is a full-time student in the Information Systems, Network Administration and Support program. He is a member of Gamma Beta Phi, which is the college's National Honor Society, and serves as vice president of the Single Parent Club -- all while working part time.

"The funds I receive from the Single Parent Program allow me to pay for day care while I'm in school. It also allows me to pay for summer classes, which I otherwise couldn't afford. If I didn't have this assistance, my life would be much more stressful, trying to figure out how to pay for everything. I would probably have to quit school."
