(Durham, N.C.) – Durham Technical Community College has received a grant for $250,000 for a program designed to accelerate students through developmental education courses, prepare them for college courses, and noticeably improve persistence and course pass rates. Project DEgree (DE stands for developmental education) is designed for students 18 to 26 who have earned a high school diploma or GED but who still need further developmental education.

Developmental education courses guide under-prepared students to the skill level expected of new college freshmen. Project DEgree provides students with intensive academic and social supports; offers an engaging project-based curriculum, and helps students structure their lives so they can maintain the momentum to complete a college credential.

Project DEgree uses many of the same instructional and student support strategies as Gateway to College, a successful college-based dropout recovery model at Durham Tech and 26 other colleges throughout the country. Gateway to College students pass developmental education courses at higher rates and succeed in their first college-level courses at higher rates than traditional degree-seeking students.

“We are pleased to provide yet another avenue for our students to succeed in college and throughout their lives,” said Dr. Bill Ingram, president of Durham Tech. “We anticipate two cohorts of 25 students each to begin the program this fall. Through Project DEgree, these students, who are not fully prepared for higher education, will receive the academic instruction and individual support they need for college success.”

The Gateway to College National Network is funding the planning and start-up grant for Project DEgree.
