Make plans to hear Howard Lee at our Orange County Campus, room 212, on Monday, Feb. 23 at 3 p.m. Lee is the chairman of the N.C. State Board of Education and newly appointed executive director of the Governor’s Education Cabinet. He will discuss his recently published memoir,The Courage to Lead: One Man’s Journey in Public Service. A sharecropper's son, Lee will talk about his experiences growing up in a racially divided South, and the challenges of poverty and racism. He will also talk about being the first black mayor of predominantly white Chapel Hill.

He was Secretary of the N.C. Department of Natural Resources and Community Development in Governor Jim Hunt’s first term. He served for 13 years in the N.C. Senate. Lee has held appointments at UNC-Chapel Hill, NCCU, and Duke University.

The Orange County Campus is located in the Waterstone Development on the east side of Old N.C. Highway 86, off exit 261 of Interstate 40, and off exits 164 and 165 of Interstate 85.
