How much does the course cost?

EMT class registration is $69.00. $25.00 supply fee, and a $17.35 insurance fee. Total cost to take the class is $111.35.

Intermediate Class registration is $69.00. $100.00 supply fee, an $80 FISDAP account fee, a $25 uniform shirt fee, and a $17.35 insurance fee. Total cost to take the class is $291.35.  Exemption from the FISDAP fee can be proven by having a FISDAP account with DTCC for a previous class.

Paramedic class registration is $69.00 per semester (there are three semesters). $100.00 supply fee, an $80 FISDAP account fee, a $25 uniform shirt fee, and a $17.35 insurance fee. Total cost to take the class is $429.35.  Exemption from the FISDAP fee can be proven by having a FISDAP account with DTCC for a previous class.

Basic Anatomy and Physiology for Paramedics is $65.00. NOTE: To register for the Anatomy and Physiology for Paramedics course; you must request permission from the instructor.  Send an email to houstons@durhamtech.edu with your name, the email address you will use for class correspondence, the EMS credential you currently hold, the EMS class you wish to attend, and a phone number that you can be reached at. A confirmation will be sent following receipt of your email.  The instructor will review the requests and email notification about acceptance into the class. Included in the return email will be instructions for registration.  Due to the amount of material presented in the course it is highly recommended that the student have access to a high speed internet connection.

Stand-alone Specialty Courses (such as CPR, ACLS, AMLS, PHTLS, etc) tuition is listed on the schedule. Some classes will have an additional fee required by the sponsoring agency such as NAEMT and are not exempt. These fees will be reflected in the announcements and collected with registration.

When are registration fees due?
All fees are due at time of registration.  For most courses, registration should be completed no later than 1 week prior to course start date.

Which fees are exempt?

Only the tuition fee is exempt if qualified.

Exemption from the FISDAP fee can be proven by having a FISDAP account with Durham Tech for a previous class. 

Other fees, if applicable, are one-time fees paid by all.

Who is exempt?

North Carolina public safety workers are exempt from the registration fee. Police, firefighters, rescue, and EMS paid or volunteer. Proof of affiliation status must be submitted with the registration form. All others must pay the registration fee.

If an agency is paying for my class and books, what do I need to bring to registration?

Bring two copies of the letter authorizing payment to register. One copy is for registration and one copy is for the bookstore if the agency is paying for your books. You do not need to bring any money to registration if you are being sponsored by an agency.

How do I Register?

Paramedic students:
  1. Go to the testing center page for a placement test schedule if you have not taken a college level Math and English course.  The testing center will give you the results of your tests.
  2. Download the Continuing Education registration form and the ALS application packet.
  3. Provide the following applicable pre-requirements:
    • Your test results or college transcripts;
    • Proof of Intermediate training current within the past 12 months;
    • EMT Basic credential and CPR card; and
    • Copy of high school diploma or GED.
  4. Bring or mail your ALS application packet to:

  5. Once you have completed the pre-requirements, you will receive a Personal Identification Number (PIN), which allows you to register for the class. Submit this number and your payment to the registration staff and they will register you. You are not able to register without the PIN, and you will not receive a PIN without completing the steps above. Receiving a PIN does not guarantee a place in the class; the class is filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Intermediate students:

EMT Basic Students:
EMT Basic course registration can be done in person at any of Durham Technical Community College’s campuses, or you can download a Continuing Education registration form. Complete the form, sign it, and mail or fax it to:

Are there any other required documents?

All EMS students participating in internships, clinical rotations, or ridealongs must have documentation of:

  • MMR Vaccination;  
  • Varicella (Chicken Pox) exposure or vaccination;
  • Pertussis (Whooping Cough) vaccination or booster within last 10 years (please ensure that you receive the Tdap or DTP booster, not Td only)
  • Hepatitis B Vaccination; and
  • TB skin test less than nine months old.   
Do I have to have a background check?
All Paramedic and Intermediate students are required to have a background check for clinical rotations.  Durham Technical Community College has contracted with a vendor to provide this service at a reasonable fee. This is discussed at the first class meeting.

Are there any other supplies that I will need and how much will they cost?

You will need a Durham Tech uniform for clinical and field internship time for all classes. The uniform and vendor for the uniform shirt is identified in class. The cost of one uniform shirt is included in the registration for both Intermediate and Paramedic fees.  Additional shirts may be purchased through a pre-selected vendor.  The costs vary depending on quality and place of purchase for the rest of the uniform items. You will need to obtain a Durham Tech Student ID prior to beginning clinicals from the Campus Security building on Main Campus.

I will not be here for registration. Can someone else register for me?

Anyone may register for you; however, you must complete and sign a Continuing Education registration for downloaded from Durham Tech’s web site for the EMT Basic course. The Continuing Education registration for and the ALS application packet must be completed and turned in for the Intermediate and Paramedic courses.  Make sure that the person registering for you has the correct registration fee.

Do I have to take the placement test?

Intermediate and Paramedic students must take the reading and math placement tests if they have not successfully completed college level English and Math course(s). You must submit a transcript that indicates you have placed into, or successfully completed, a college-level reading and English language writing course and successful completion of a MAT 060 course or placement into a MAT 070 course at the time of registration for the Intermediate or Paramedic course.

What is the placement test?
The COMPASS test is taken on the computer and assesses writing, reading, and basic math and algebra skills. The test is taken through the testing center and a test center schedule may be viewed via the web site.

Does the college course have to be in EMS or a related area?

No. However; the college transcript must indicate you have placed into, or successfully completed a college-level reading and English language writing course and placed into a MAT 070 course or successfully completed a MAT 060 course.

Does the transcript have to be official?

No. If you are getting a transcript from Durham Technical Community College, please plan to get it 48 hours ahead of general registration days.

Is there financial aid for this course?
No. This course is a noncredit class so Pell grants and other forms of aid do not apply.
