What is the BioPharma 1: Basic Laboratory Skills?

biotech bootcamp photoThis hands-on, introductory course helps students learn how to perform functions normally expected in a laboratory setting. Students receive training on the operation and care of laboratory equipment, sterilization of glassware, and general housekeeping duties required in a lab. Students are involved in proper inventory procedures, ordering supplies, labeling of samples, and safely storing and disposing of chemicals.

What will the BioPharma 1 program prepare me to do?

biotech bootcamp photoUpon completion, of the BioPharma 1: Basic Laboratory Skills training program, students will be proficient in operating, calibrating, and maintaining instruments commonly used in the lab such as:

  • Autoclave
  • Analytical balances
  • Centrifuge
  • Incubators
  • Filter sterilization
  • Gel Systems
  • Micropipets
  • pH meters
  • Conductivity meters
  • Microscopes
  • Spectrophotometers

In addition, students will be able to prepare:

  • Mass/Volume solutions
  • % solutions
  • Molar solutions
  • Dilutions and serial dilutions
  • Various types of media and buffer
What do I learn during lecture time?

The course provides comprehensive education and training in many of the fundamental skills needed for entry-level positions with hospital, clinics, biotechnology, chemical,laboratory based start-ups or pharmaceutical companies. Lectures present selected topics and exercises to give the participants a solid background in the scientific principles upon which the technologies and applications used in modern biotechnology laboratories are based.  

The Biotechnology arena, including job market overview, job search tools and strategies, resume preparation, interviewing practice, time management, and problem solving are also incorporated in the course.

What do I learn during lab time?

biotech bootcamp photoThe lab exercises are hands-on and are designed to provide students with practical laboratory experiences and to build proficiency with the techniques used in labs. Students will perform sterile techniques, aliquots samples; prepare laboratory specimens. Students will also be exposed to hazard categories, MSDS, and disposal procedures. Lab work is designed to provide quality, hands-on training and familiarity with cutting edge techniques, technologies, and equipment.

What are the admission and registration process for the BioPharma 1: Basic Laboratory Skills program?
  1. Must be 18 years of age or older;
  2. Must have a high school diploma or GED;
  3. Demonstrate appropriate reading level (COMPASS 54 or ASSET 35) and math level (COMPASS 27 or ASSET 36). Placement tests are offered by the DTCC Placement Testing Center; or
  4. Copy of a transcript of any completed college degree (two-year or above).

Bring or send required prerequisite information to a location below, where you will be assigned a Personal Identification Number (PIN). The PIN number must then accompany your registration.

What are the costs for BioPharma 1: Basic Laboratory Skills?

The total cost is $85 for registration and supplies. Please note that only credit cards, checks, and money orders are now accepted for payment.

When are registration fees due?
The $85 fee must be paid on the day of registration.

Do I need to purchase a textbook?
Yes. The textbook will be available at the Durham Technical Community College bookstore. The textbook is: "Biotechnology: Science for the New Millennium, First Edition textbook and the lab manual with CD” by Ellen Daugherty.

Is financial aid available for students?

No, financial aid is not available for BioPharma 1: Basic Laboratory Skills.

Where is the program offered?
BioPharma 1 is offered on the Main Campus located on Lawson Street and at the Northern Durham Campus on SnowHill Road.

What is the salary range for an entry-level lab assistant?

Earnings vary based on skill and experience, but the average salary is $11-$13 per hour.
