Medical Coding Program Jobs: The Medical Coding Program provides you with the necessary skills and core concepts to allow you to seek entry-level coding positions in a variety of healthcare facilities, including hospitals, outpatient facilities, physicians' offices, nursing facilities, home healthcare, and hospices.
National Certifications: You may also elect to sit for certification examinations offered by the:
- American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC–www.aapc.com) and/or the
- American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA–www.ahima.org)
Note: You must meet the respective organization’s examination criteria. Practical experience and a strong aptitude in this field are recommended prior to sitting for these certification exams.
Instructor-Led Online or Traditional Instruction: The Medical Coding Program is offered via traditional classroom instruction and/or in an instructor-led online course format. Students can choose to complete the program by selecting six online or traditional courses below:
The recommended course sequence follows (O=Online, T=Traditional):
- Expanded Medical Terminology for the Health Care Professional (O,T)
- Anatomy and Physiology for the Medical Office Professional (O,T)
- Medical Coding I (O,T)
- Medical Coding II (O,T)
- Medical Insurance and Billing (O,T)
- a. Electronic Health Records (O,T) (Required for students starting the program after Fall 2008)
b. Elective ( Only required if started the program prior to Spring, 2009)

The Medical Office Procedures Program emphasizes the principles of working in a health care office or hospital setting and assists the student in obtaining skills used in entry-level health care positions such as receptionist, file clerk, or unit coordinator.
Skills Acquired: Students gain experience in understanding medical law and ethics, utilizing effective oral and written communication, and managing office procedures, including appointment scheduling, patient reception and registration, medical records, medical billing, health insurance, and business operations.
Students utilize MS Word, the Internet, and email during the program.
