- How do I register?
You will be asked to submit verification of eligibility to DTCC Attention:
Nursing Assistant Dept., 1637 Lawson Street Durham, NC 27703, or fax
information to 919-686-3479 Attn: Nursing Assistant Dept. The Nursing
Assistant Dept. will then mail you a form that assigns you a Personal
Identification Number (PIN) that states you are eligible to register
for Nursing Assistant classes. This PIN form must accompany the registration
form. Registration will take place at the NC Mutual building 6th floor,
Corporate Education building, or Orange County Skills Development building
between the hours of 8:30am – 5:00pm. Registration fees must be
paid in full at the time of registration.

Can I register early?
Once the course schedule is available, you may register at any time
prior to the start of the course as long as you have the PIN form,
but remember that classes are on a first-come-first-served basis.

Can someone else register for me?
Anyone may register for you; however, you must complete a Continuing
Education registration form. Make sure that the person registering
for you has your PIN form and the correct amount for the fee.

How do I become eligible for the
Nurse Aide I class?
You must take the reading placement test if you do not have college
course(s) you have taken in the past and successfully completed.

What is the placement test?
The placement test is a reading comprehension test. There will be
no nursing or math questions on the test. You must make a 39 or better
on the reading ASSET test, a 74 or better on the COMPASS test through
the testing center or make an 8.3 or better on the TABE test.

Does the college course have to
be in nursing or related area?
No. Successful completion of Reading 80 or 90 is acceptable. Developmental
courses (other than DTCC Reading 80 or 90) do not qualify as a college
course.

Does the transcript have to be
official?
No. Unofficial transcripts are accepted. If you are getting a transcript
from DTCC, plan to get it at least on day in advance of when you plan
to register. Transcripts are usually not available at the time of
registration. We will also accept a grade report form.
- What is the PIN form?
It is a Personal Identification Number form that verifies your eligibility
to register. The PIN form must accompany your registration form.

How much does the course cost?
Fees must be paid when you register.

How much are the books?
The books are approximately (Combo-book & study)$56.95;Text $40.95;
Workbook $22.95; Combo Package and Audio $70.95; and Audio CD $14.95.
You will also need a Procedure packet that is available in the DTCC
College Bookstore at a cost of approximately $5.00.

Are there any other supplies that
I will need and how much will they cost?
You will need a white uniform or scrubs, white shoes, stethoscope,
transfer belt, books, pens, notebook, paper. Costs will depend on
the student and where they get their supplies. These supplies are
not needed on the first day and will be reviewed during the orientation
session on the first day of class.

Is there financial aide for this
course?
No. This course is a non-credit class, so Pell grants and other forms
of aide do not apply. If the student is on some form of assistance
then they should call their worker and inquire about getting a letter
of payment.

If an agency is paying for my class
and books what do I need to bring to registration?
Bring 2 copies of the letter of payment to registration. One copy
for registration and one copy for the bookstore if the agency is paying
for your books. You will not need to bring any money to registration
if you are being sponsored by an agency.

I am in the ADN program and need
to have this class.
There are many opportunities to take the class throughout the year.

Do you need a high school diploma
or GED?
No.
- Do I have to be 18 years old to take this course?
Yes. You must be 18 years of age and/or a high school graduate to register
for this Continuing Education class, or be 16 years old or older and
have a letter of consent for your high school administrator. Refer to
Continuing Education course

- Where do I take the state exam?
As of July l, 2006 the North Carolina Department of Health and Human
Services, Division of Facilities Services (DFS) has contracted with
Promissor to conduct competency testing statewide. The cost for competency
testing is $92.00.

- Where else can I take this class?
Most Community Colleges offer this course. North Carolina Nurse Aide
Registry has a list of State Approved Training and Competency Evaluation
locations on their web site at www.ncnar.org
