Nurse Aide I Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How do I register?
    You will be asked to submit verification of eligibility to DTCC Attention: Nursing Assistant Program, 1637 Lawson Street Durham, NC 27703, or fax information to 919-686-3479.   Registration will take place on Main Campus - Corporate Education building, or Orange County Skills Development building (503 W. Franklin Street Chapel Hill, NC) or NC Mutual building until December 15, after January 7, 2009 registrations will be accepted at our new location SOUTHBank Building, 3rd floor between the hours of 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  Registration fees must be paid in full at the time of registration.

  2. Can I register early?
    Once the course schedule is available, you may register at any time prior to the start of the course as long as you have the PIN.

  3. Can someone else register for me?
    Anyone may register for you; however, you must complete a Continuing Education registration form. Make sure that the person registering for you has your PIN form and the correct amount for the fee.

  4. How do I become eligible for the Nurse Aide I class?
    You must take the reading placement test if you have not taken and successfully completed college course(s) in the past.  Developmental courses (other than DTCC Reading 80 or 90) do not qualify as a college course.

  5. What is the placement test?
    The placement test is a reading comprehension test.  There will be no nursing or math questions on the test.  You must make a 39 or better on the reading ASSET test, a 74 or better on the COMPASS test through the testing center or make an 8.3 or better on the TABE test.
  6. Does the transcript have to be official?
    No.  Unofficial transcripts are accepted.  If you have a DTCC transcript, plan to request it at least one week in advance of when you plan to register.  Transcripts are usually not available at the time of registration. We will also accept a grade report form.

  7. What is the PIN form?
    It is a Personal Identification Number assigned to you after you show proof of eligibility to one of the registration locations. 

  8. How much does the course cost?
    Fees must be paid when you register.
    OCSDC, Chapel Hill - $106.35
    NC Mutual, Durham - $116.35
  9. How much are the books?
    The books are approximately Text $39.95; Workbook $24.95.  You will also need a Skills Procedure packet that is available in the DTCC College Bookstore at a cost of approximately $5.00. Books can also be purchased through on-line book vendors.  See www.halfprice.com  for sponsored textbook listings.

  10. Are there any other supplies that I will need and how much will they cost?
    You will need a white uniform or scrubs, white shoes, stethoscope, and transfer (gait). Costs will vary and specific information regarding supplies will be reviewed during the orientation session on the first day of class.
  11. Are there other expenses?
    A national criminal record background check, specific health immunizations, and Health Care Provider CPR certification may be required for some clinical rotations.  Information regarding these requirements will be reviewed during the orientation session on the first day of class.

  12. Is a criminal background check conducted by the county courthouse acceptable?
    No. A nationwide background check is required and DTCC request students use the contracted vendor.

  13. Is there financial aide for this course?
    No. This course is a noncredit class, so Pell grants and other forms of aide do not apply.
  1. If an agency is paying for my class and books what do I need to bring to registration?
    Bring 2 copies of the letter of payment to registration.  One copy for registration and one copy for the bookstore if the agency is paying for your books.  You will not need to bring any money to registration if you are being sponsored by an agency.

  2. I am in the ADN program and need to have this class.
    There are many opportunities to take the class throughout the year.  Look for the Continuing Education schedule to sign up for our classes.

  3. Do you need a high school diploma or GED?
    No.

  4. Do I have to be 18 years old to take this course?
    Yes. You must be 18 years of age and/or a high school graduate to register for this Continuing Education class, or be 16 years old or older and have a letter of consent for your high school administrator. Refer to Continuing Education course schedule for more information.

  5. Where do I take the state exam?
    Competency testing is offered through Pearson VUE, which has test sites located across North Carolina.

  6. Where else can I take this class?
    Most Community Colleges offer this course. North Carolina Nurse Aide Registry has a list of State Approved Training and Competency Evaluation locations on their web site at ncnar.org
