Durham Technical Community College offers courses in English as a Second Language (ESL) to non-native speakers at several locations in Durham and Orange counties. Courses are free, but students must be at least 18 years old to enroll.
Beginning, intermediate, and advanced ESL classes are offered. These classes give non-native speakers of English the opportunity to develop their English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in real-life situations. Check the schedule of classes below for times and locations.
Specialized courses in pronunciation, conversation, reading, and writing are offered in the afternoons. Workplace ESL classes can be designed upon request; employers can call 919-536-7221, ext. 3226 for more information about worksite classes.
Classes, times, and locations may change without prior
notice. Classes fill up quickly and space is limited.

the placement exam at the time and location where you will study.
Seating for the scheduled testing dates will be on a “first
come, first served” basis. The testing process takes one

on test scores and the results of a short interview in English.
Do not bring children. Students who bring children to the testing
sessions will be asked to leave.
Students should bring the following items:
• A pen and a pencil;
• A photo ID; and
• Date of birth; and

“The American Experience” |
| Designed for high intermediate and advanced students,
the course has a flexible structure to allow students to polish
their English language skills as they contrast and compare various
world cultures with American culture. This is accomplished through
lively and topical discussions, reading, writing, and use of the
media (newspapers, magazines, videos, TV, etc.). The course relies
heavily on student participation. |
