Esthetics Technology Program Frequently Asked Questions

What is Esthetics?

Esthetics is a specialty section of education taken from Cosmetology.  It specifically relates to the health and beautification of the skin, both face and body.

What is the difference between a Cosmetologist and an Esthetician?

A cosmetologist is a hair care specialist, who has minimal training on skin care. An esthetician is a skin care therapist who has special training in the study and care of the skin.

 Do I have the personal qualities that make a great esthetician?
    • You enjoy working with others.
    • You desire to help and nurture others.
    • You are good with your hands.
    • You care for your own skin and well being.
    • You are interested in the beauty field.
    • You have a compassionate and caring spirit.

If these statements apply to you, you have the potential to make an excellent esthetician.

What job opportunities will I have with an Esthetic License?

With your license you can go into many different areas within the field of esthetics such as: medical esthetician*, make-up artist, cosmetics buyer, cosmetic researcher, beauty editor, and instructor of esthetics. We will discuss the different avenues you might consider in the program. This will assist you in finding an area that appeals to your interest with skin care.  * The medical esthetician may require additional training.

Do you help students find employment?

No, however we can give you leads that could potentially lead to jobs. The student’s level of professionalism will better the odds of getting a position.

What is the average class size?

The average class sizes are 10-12 students, with a maximum of 15 students.

When do you begin practical (hands on) training as opposed to lecture?

We incorporate both practical training and lecture from the very first day of class. Approximately the last 300 ending hours of the course is a concentration of practical study to prepare you for the esthetics industry.

Can I pick and choose when I want to attend class?

You may choose the day or the evening and weekend class series. You must take both classes in the day or evening and weekend sections to complete the program.

If I am already working in the industry and wanted to come back to “freshen up” would I be welcome?

Our door is always open for your needs and concerns, we just ask that you call beforehand so we can set up an appointment to better assist you.

What is the employment outlook for Estheticians?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for skin care specialists is expected to grow by 34 percent from 2006 to 2016. This growth primarily will be a result of an increasing population and from the growing demand for personal appearance services, particularly skin care services.

What type of salary could I earn?

As in any profession, you work your way up the pay scale.  You will probably start with a base salary while building a clientele. After your clientele is established, you may switch to a commission on services starting at approximately 40% and rises gradually as you gain experience. The products you sell will provide an additional commission. The amount you will make will fluctuate with the seasons. The yearly salary range for Estheticians is $20,000-$60,000 or more based on experience..

How long is the Esthetician program?

North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Arts Examiner requires 600 hours; which will be completed in two class sessions.

  • The 600 instructional and clinical hours required by the state;
  • Text Book;
  • Name Tag;
  • Parking placard;
  • Student ID;
  • Participation in all DTCC activities; and
