| The Artist at Work Discover your inner artist! Durham Technical Community College, in partnership with The Arts Center in Carrboro, is pleased to announce two new certificate programs in the fine arts: the Certificate in Drawing and the Certificate in Painting. Artists enrolled in the programs learn technical skills in their discipline and develop their own personal style of expression as they create their portfolios. Each certificate program culminates in the Critique and Portfolio courses, where students discuss and critique each other’s portfolios as well as receive advice and criticism from professional artists. Courses may take place at The Arts Center or at other locations as noted in the schedule. Students must register through Durham Technical Community College. Since its inception in 1974, The ArtsCenter has worked to nourish the arts, creativity, and community through education, performance, and exhibition. The ArtsCenter has grown from a single painting class to an all-inclusive visual and performing arts center, offering a multitude of programs ranging in focus from concerts to summer camp and art classes to theatre performances. | Painted Furniture Workshop Goes to the Animals – $95 | ||||||||||
Three local artists teach a painted furniture workshop to create pieces for the Independent Animal Rescue Annual Auction, which benefits thousands of animals in the Triangle. Well-known Durham artists Emily Weinstein, Kathyrn DeMarco, and Paula MacLeod show how to prepare furniture for application and explain faux finishes, mosaic and collage techniques. Participants then create works of art out of ordinary household furniture. Most materials are supplied but a short materials list will be provided. The workshop fee of $95 includes a piece of furniture that participants will use for the class and which will then be donated to Independent Animal Rescue. This is a non-profit organization that receives no public funds. Finished furniture will be auctioned at the Independent Animal Rescue Auction in July. An introductory meeting and furniture pickup will be held on May 3 at Northgate Mall. For information or to register, call Dina Logan at 919-969-3032, ext. 251, or email logand@durhamtech.edu. (Because this course is self-supporting, no tuition waivers or exemptions are allowed.) More information about the workshop, IAR, and the artists are available at:
