American Sign Language I, Beginning – $69

Learn the basics of American Sign Language (ASL). This course is designed for students who have little or no previous knowledge of ASL. Students will learn the ASL manual alphabet and simple sentence structures. This course has been approved by Durham Public Schools for license renewal credit. American Sign Language II, Beginning – $69

Continue to build on your skills from Beginning American Sign Language. The focus is on refining the use of basic ASL sentences. Students learn routine communicative functions of the language. Information about the deaf community is included. This course has been approved by Durham Public Schools for license renewal credit. Textbook may be required. Chinese, Beginning I – $69

This course can help persons who are doing business with Chinese companies, planning to travel, or simply desiring to learn about the customs and culture of China. Study basic grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary. Learn useful everyday expressions and phrases from a native instructor. 24 hours.

This course is designed for students with little or no background in Farsi language who are looking to gain the basic tools required for communication with native speakers. Students complete the course with the foundational vocabulary and grammar required to conduct casual conversations with native Farsi speakers, a basic comprehension of reading and writing simple documents, and a good understanding of Iranian Muslim culture. Because

Beginning Spanish Language Program – $195

Spanish is a critically important global language you can use during work, travel, and socializing. With almost 400 million Spanish speakers worldwide and a growing number in the United States, the ability to speak Spanish provides you with greater job opportunities and aids you in travels abroad. The Beginning Spanish Language Program is designed for students, adult learners, and working professionals who wish to develop proficiency in Spanish to enhance their academic and career opportunities.

The Beginning Spanish Language Program is for students with little or no Spanish language exposure. This faster-paced course provides students with an integrative approach to language learning. Students focus on pronunciation, diction, grammar, vocabulary, and reading as well as beginning conversation and writing. Textbook required. 70 hours.

Intermediate Spanish Language Program – $330

This program is for students who have completed Beginning Spanish levels I-V and are ready for a more challenging study of the Spanish language. Students must have an intermediate level of reading, writing and verbal Spanish and have completed Beginning Spanish I-V or the Beginning Spanish Language Program. Upon completion of the coursework, students are able to schedule the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview Test (OPI). The ACTFL OPI ratings are recognized by many Fortune 500 companies, U.S. government agencies, and by the American Council on Education (ACE). The ACTFL OPI is a standardized procedure for global assessment of functional speaking ability. For some specific job openings, applicants are required to test their skills and abilities to determine whether they meet the job requirements. Textbook required. 70 hours.

ONLINE! Spanish for Real Life – $120

This is a REFRESHER COURSE for those with previous Spanish language experience.

This courses uses ¡Trato hecho!, an innovative beginning Spanish program that emphasizes the features of the vocabulary needed for everyday communication in students’ communities or in the workplace. Audio components are infused throughout the coursework. Students can listen to vocabulary and grammar and practice with models for pronunciation.

A Spanish-English dictionary of the student’s choice is strongly suggested. Textbook required. Required prerequisite: At least a beginning level of Spanish proficiency. NEW! Workplace Spanish for Health Care Professionals – $69

This very career-oriented course is designed for beginners who, in their roles as health care professionals, must communicate with patients and families whose native language is Spanish. Students become skilled at understanding reactions of Spanish-speaking people to everyday situations; learn to express, in simple Spanish, what they need to communicate; and develop a beginning level reading and writing ability. Students also develop
an understanding and appreciation of Hispanic cultural attitudes as they relate to health care. No grammar to learn, no rules to memorize, and no prior Spanish experience necessary. Textbook required. 24 hours.

This industry-specific course was developed to help elementary, middle, and high school teachers and school staff communicate effectively on a basic level with Spanish-speaking students and parents. Spanish Language Courses, Beginning Levels I-IV

Learn Spanish at Durham Technical Community College. The Continuing Education Division offers classes in four levels of Beginning Spanish. These levels become progressively more advanced, building on the skills learned from the prior course. Spanish I and II are designed for students with no or little previous exposure to the Spanish language. Spanish III and IV are more advanced and help better prepare you for the specialized or intermediate-level course. These courses allow you to gain the fundamentals necessary to pursue further Spanish study. Textbook required. Each class is 24 hours.

Conversational Spanish

The purpose of these courses is to develop Spanish language conversational ability by providing students with additional opportunities to practice speaking and listening skills. It also complements prior Spanish language courses by reinforcing the grammar, vocabulary, and cultural points presented in those courses. Emphasis is on oral practice. Textbooks are not required.
