The popular culture of Brazil is analyzed through music, film, children’s books, and short pieces of fiction and non-fiction. The course is conducted in Portuguese. NEW! Spanish Immersion Program – $125

This program provides participants the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Spanish-speaking culture and language. Improving communication between English and Spanish speakers and exposing English speakers to the culture of the Hispanic world raise global awareness and cultural sensitivity.

The program is divided into two parts, language and culture. Focus on learning elementary Spanish and every-day basic conversation to develop basic verbal communication skills in Spanish. Lunch at a Hispanic restaurant is included and is considered a part of the immersion process. In the afternoon, students reconvene to attend presentations on different aspects of the Hispanic world; some possible topics include art, music, dance, literature, current events, geography, cross-cultural studies, politics, healthcare, and pop culture. 30 hours.

Spanish Language Courses, Beginning Levels I-IV

Learn Spanish at Durham Technical Community College. The Continuing Education Division offers classes in four levels of Beginning Spanish. These levels become progressively more advanced, building on the skills learned from the prior course. Spanish I and II are designed for students with no or little previous exposure to the Spanish language. Spanish III and IV are more advanced and help better prepare you for the specialized or intermediate-level course. These courses allow you to gain the fundamentals necessary to pursue further Spanish study. Textbook required. Each class is 25 hours. 2.5 TRCs.

Conversational Spanish

Improve your ability to communicate in any situation with this intermediate-level Spanish class that integrates vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation into situational conversations. Conducted in Spanish, this transition class is designed to increase your confidence in speaking and in understanding others in a business or daily-life setting. Cultural differences, customs, and various regional dialects are also discussed to increase student awareness of the Spanish-speaking environment. Content specific to the makeup of the class may be discussed as time allows. Intermediate-level fluency is recommended prior to taking this course. Textbook required. 25 hours.

This course focuses on helping students develop listening and oral skills by using real-life medical scenarios closely coupled with clear Spanish grammar explanations and relevant vocabulary. 25 hours.

This is an intermediate/advanced-level class that includes poetry and prose, fiction and nonfiction, from 20th and 21st century Latin American writers. Students study their works   for vocabulary and grammar usage, as well as for elements of style and interpretation of meaning. Join us to read some of the best contemporary literature as we improve our ability to communicate in Spanish. 25 hours.

REFRESHER COURSE for those with previous Spanish Language Experience.

This courses uses, ¡Trato hecho!, an innovative beginning Spanish program that emphasizes the features of the vocabulary needed for everyday communication in students’ communities or in the workplace. The course provides materials that are organized into compact and functional sections that students can use to test their abilities and apply new material before progressing to the next level. The course also fosters students’ understanding of Hispanic cultures and their growing importance in the world by providing contexts that emphasize the usefulness of Spanish in daily life in North America as well as when traveling around the world. Audio components are infused throughout the coursework so the students can listen to vocabulary and grammar as well as practice with models for pronunciation. A Spanish-English dictionary of the student’s choice is strongly suggested. Textbook required. Required prerequisites: At least a minimal beginning level of Spanish proficiency will help students receive the most benefits from this structured, self-paced, and self-motivated course. Students must have access to a computer, Microsoft Word for word processing, an Internet browser, a working email address, and be comfortable navigating the web. Teaching Foreign Language and ESL – The Basics – $55

This course covers “the nuts and bolts” of grammar and sound. Exploring the basic structure of language, this course creates the foundation from which you learn to teach English as a second language. Discover the secrets of successful foreign language/ESL instruction. Gain knowledge on learning styles and learning modalities; multiple intelligences; and how to use music, movement, props, visuals, and games in your classroom. Also explore the applications of reading and writing, cultural variations, issues, and trends in ESL as well as teaching methodologies. Textbook required. 25 hours.
