| In cooperation with the Durham Arts Council, Durham Technical Community College is offering two certificate programs: Make a Living in Graphic Design and Make a Living in Photography. You can fine-tune your present skills, learn new ones, and enrich your career with courses recognized for their ability to meet training and development needs. CEU credits are offered with each course. All courses take place at the Durham Arts Council (DAC). Students must register through Durham Technical Community College. |

| Make a Living in Photography | |||||
| Program Overview: Careers in Photography Ready to take your photography skills to the next level? If you want to make a living taking photographs this track is for you. Commercial, wedding, portrait photography, and photojournalism are a few of the specializations you can choose. Each area requires core photographic skills, but it takes more than the ability to point and shoot to become a successful photographer. It takes hard work and dedication to learning both the technical and visual aspects of this field of visual communication. You might ask, “Where do I begin?” The answer is, at the beginning! Start with the first core classes. Take Basic Camera and Black and White Darkroom Techniques and get your feet wet. Following are two more core classes, additional skill building classes, and classes that will teach you the tools of the trade. By the time you finish this program, you will understand the depth of this field and be able to apply it to real work. You will also have a certificate that states that you have completed a series of classes in photography. In addition, you will have work samples from your classes to put into a portfolio that shows you have indeed gained experience and knowledge about this dynamic field. Required Courses Include:

| Adobe Photoshop for Photographers - $218 | |||||
In this introductory course, learn how useful and rich PhotoShop can be for your photography business. Become proficient in image manipulation, scanning, composite works of art, flyer creation, newspaper ads, comics, trick-photography and magazines. All students in this course receive digital studio access during open studio hours. Students should have a rudimentary understanding of PC’s. (Because this course is self supporting, no tuition waivers or exemptions are allowed.) 18 hours.

| Basic Camera and Black/White Darkroom Techniques – $198 | |||||
This course offers you the first building block to becoming confident in manual camera operation and understanding the magic of darkroom processes! The fundamentals included are manual camera operation, light meters, exposure, filters, flashes, elements of composition, film, film processing, contact sheets, and fine print developing. This course is the basis to all modern photography practices, including digital. Bring a 35mm camera with manual capabilities. Film requirements are discussed during the first class. All students receive darkroom studio access during open studio hours. This course does not require any prior camera knowledge. (Because this course is self-supporting, no tuition waivers or exemptions are allowed.) 18 hours.

| Digital Photography – $198 | |||||
Digital photography is cost-effective and growing in popularity. This fast-paced field is the wave of the future; all photographers need to have an understanding of digital. Learn how to capture, edit, and produce top-quality images for the Internet and printing. By mastering digital camera techniques, you gain access to a whole new world rarely obtained by photographers with conventional film photography. This course guides you through the process of evaluating digital cameras, digital imaging, digital editing, and digital printing. All students receive digital studio access during open studio hours. This class is a great complement to Adobe Photoshop for Photographers! (Because this course is self-supporting, not tuition waivers or exemptions are allowed.) 18 hours.

Now that you’ve learned the basics of film developing and making prints in the darkroom, it’s time to really flex your creative muscle. Ansel Adams said that the photographic negative is like a musical score and the print is the performance. Join master printer John Cowan as he conducts a class that is certain to make your prints absolutely sing. You learn advanced printing techniques such as split filtering, toning, and bleaching. Find out what masterpieces are hiding in your negatives! (Because this course is self-supporting, no tuition waivers or exemptions are allowed). 18 hours.

Whether you want to consider a new career, change jobs in your present company, become a freelancer or consider further education, this program is a great place to start. You might ask, “Where do I begin?” The answer is, "At the beginning" Start with the first core classes. Take Introduction to Graphic Design and get your feet wet. | NEW! History Graphic Design – $150 | |||||
Graphic design has a rich history. This class presents a brief overview of where graphic design roots begin, starting with a simple hand mark made on a cave wall. Art history has a direct relationship to graphic design. Learn when and where design evolved into a field aimed at communicating a message to sell a product or an idea. Learn about some pillars of design history and how they changed the visual world of selling ideas in the 20th century. (Because this course is self-supporting, no tuition waivers or exemptions are allowed.) 16 hours.

| Introduction to Graphic Design (core class 1) – $213 | |||||
The focus of this class is to learn to think like a designer. You are introduced to the basic building blocks of graphic design. These Basic Design Principles are explored using the grid, typography, images, and color. Each week a new topic is explained and exercises follow that use these principles to visually portray the topic at hand. Please note that we will not be using computers; instead, we will be creating each project by hand, using scissors, glue, paper and images that you will create or collect. We will work on projects in class. There will be individual presentations and group discussions. By the last class, you have a portfolio of samples that show that you have learned the basics of this complicated and exciting field.
