Advising Information:
- Attend an Orientation.
Orientation is your opportunity to understand how Durham Tech
can help you reach your educational or career goals, understand
the advising and registration process, learn about the various
resources available to help support you during this transition,
and provide you with a checklist of important tasks that will
help ensure that you have prepared well for this important transition.
Review the Orientation Schedule
for more information about dates, times, and locations.
- Get Prepared for General Advising and Registration
Day.
Prepare for general registration by starting a file of important
documents. In your file, include a copy of your placement test
scores, your notice of acceptance, and any previous college
transcripts you might have that would indicate possible transfer
credit. Take time to review the course schedule and possible
closed courses by visiting Durham Tech’s closed
course list at least one day before registration.
- If You’re Planning To Use Financial
Aid, Know the Deadlines.
If you are interested in financial aid, it’s important
to know that the application process can take up to five weeks,
especially during registration periods. Students must be admitted
to a program and complete the entire financial aid application
process prior to registering for courses during General Registration.
Students are often unaware of the various documentation and
other steps required to complete the financial aid application
process, so getting an early start and knowing the deadlines
for completing this process are essential. Pick up an application
for financial aid in the Financial Aid office, room 56 of the
White Building, or get more information by viewing the Financial
Aid section of the web site.
- Start Your Day In the
Advising Locations.
On January 5 – 6, advisors will be available from 9:00
a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. to help
you select courses for the Spring semester. Your first step
is to discuss course selection with an advisor at one of the
appropriate advising locations listed below. Please review the
campus map for building
locations.

Dual Enrollment: White Building,

Qualified high school students 16 years old or older may register
for dual enrollment courses. They must meet all requirements
and prerequisites for courses they plan to take. Call Mary
Anne Grabarek at 919-536-7217 for further information.
Degree-seeking students
should visit the advising location appropriate to their program.
Non-degree-seeking students (Special Students) should visit
the advising location most closely related to the courses they
wish to take. There is no separate
advising location for non-degree-seeking students or students
taking developmental studies courses.
For example, a student admitted to the Computer Programming
degree would visit the Information Technologies advising location.
A student preparing to transfer to UNC would go to the University
Transfer advising location. Students who want to enroll in any
developmental English, reading, or math courses may see an advisor
in the location most closely related to the upper level courses
desired.
IMPORTANT: All students (degree-seeking
and non-degree-seeking) must present written documentation to
satisfy course prerequisites. To make sure that you can register
for the courses you need, bring your personal copy of your placement
test scores and college transcripts with you to advising.
-
Register
for Your Courses.
Immediately after you have met with an advisor, you will register
for your selected courses at the locations provided on campus.
Due to the high volume of student traffic, General Registration
can take quite a while, so come prepared to spend some time
getting through this process.
- Pay Your Tuition.
Upon being entered into your courses, visit the appropriate
payment location. You have many options for payment including
cash, check, and charge. It is important to note that if you
are receiving financial aid or other agency support, you are
still required to settle your tuition account in person at the
Business Office. If you register during General Registration,
you must pay the full tuition bill by 6:00 p.m. on the same
day that you register. If you do not pay by 6:00 p.m., your
registration will be removed from the system at the end of the
day to reopen the class to other students during remaining General
Registration and Drop/Add days. Don’t let this happen
to you. Be prepared to pay on the day that you register.
- Get Ready for Class.
Spring classes begin Monday, January 9, 2006. Get ready by buying
your books and everything else you’ll need to be successful
for your first day of class.
Late
Registration and Drop/Add:
All advising for late registration and drop/add takes place in
the Advising Center, White
Building, room 49, and at the
Northern Durham Center.
