Director, Grants Development

Reports to:

Senior Vice President, Institutional Advancement

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Director, Grants Development provides leadership, coordination, technical assistance, and grant writing expertise for grants development throughout the college. This position collaborates with college faculty and staff, the college Foundation, employers, and community partners to develop and acquire federal, state, and local and private sector grants in support of Durham Tech’s Strategic Plan and workforce development efforts. Emphasis is on grants research, proposal writing, and grants management. More specifically, the duties and responsibilities are as follows:

  • Research and identify funding opportunities available through local, state, and federal governmental agencies, as well as through private and corporate foundations;
  • Provide information to appropriate college faculty, staff, and community partners about potential grant opportunities;
  • Evaluate requests for proposals and funding guidelines from government agencies and foundations to determine funding probability and potential impact on college resources;
  • Serve as the principal grants writer for the college;
  • Coordinate all phases of grant proposal development and submission in cooperation with faculty, staff, and college departments;
  • Gather input from multiple stakeholders, synthesize diverse ideas, and articulate measurable outcomes;
  • Gather pertinent statistical and background information and develop supportive narrative statements and demographic data for incorporating into grant proposals and external funding applications;
  • Work with college staff to develop grant proposal budgets and prepare justification for budgetary expenditures;
  • Facilitate, edit, and support proposals written by other college employees;
  • Serve as the reviewer for all grants originating within the college prior to submission to the President for approving and signing;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with potential and current funding sources to ensure appropriate consideration of grant proposals;
  • Develop and maintain resources to assist directors and managers of grant-funded projects and activities in managing their grants, documenting attainment of project objectives, and generating as well as submitting required reports to funding organizations;
  • Develop and maintain a library of grant sources, resources, guides, and technical information related to grants development;
  • Assist in offering grantsmanship workshops and other grants development-focused training for college faculty and staff;
  • Actively participate in college planning processes to ensure integration with grants development and implementation; and
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Senior Vice President for Institutional Advancement and/or the President.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • Minimum of three years of experience in grants research, proposal writing, and grants management;
  • Knowledge of grants design, proposal preparation, and submission components;
  • Demonstrated grant success with governmental agencies and private foundations;
  • Successful experience in working on cross-functional teams and in developing programs and partnerships;
  • Excellent verbal communication and persuasive writing skills;
  • Strong planning, organizing, budgeting, and managing skills in a complex work environment;
  • Strong interpersonal skills to deal effectively with college faculty and staff, community members, and individuals from outside agencies;
  • Demonstrated data analysis and evaluation skills;
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications and web-based grant research and submission methods;
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to schedule, prioritize, and finalize activities to meet grant application deadlines; and
  • Understanding and commitment to the community college mission. 
Normal Work Hours:

A 40-hour workweek, including ability and willingness to work irregular hours when necessary to meet grant application deadlines and/or complete related responsibilities.
