TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

This letter explains the admissions policy of Durham Technical Community College for international students.

Our policy is that we do not issue an I-20 for an F-1 visa until after a prospective student has come to our campus for placement testing and other requirements and has been accepted for admission into a curriculum program.  We do our own testing and do not use the TOEFL exam.  The prospective student must have completed the equivalent of a U.S. secondary school education and must submit official transcripts of those academic records, as well as transcripts of any higher education.  From some countries, the"O" level exam scores are required.  A certified translator must officially translate all transcripts into English.  For those interested in our English as a Second Language program, please be aware that we do not issue an I-20 for this noncredit program.

In addition, it will be necessary to provide us with a satisfactory and adequate statement of financial support and evidence of an acceptable U.S. health insurance policy for international students.  For each year of the program, the student will need approximately $18,000 to cover expenses.  An affidavit of financial support (I-134) signed by the person responsible for support, accompanied by supporting documents such as a bank statement or evidence of employment is also required.  Durham Technical Community College has no financial aid for non-resident international students, and these students must pay the North Carolina out-of-state tuition fees.  Also, students must make their own living and transportation arrangements.  The college has no dormitories or other living facilities.

Durham Technical Community College is an open-door institution, and persons who meet the admissions requirements are usually accepted. Some programs, such as nursing, have long waiting lists.  After acceptanceinto the college, we will advise students how to apply to USCIS for a change of status to F-1 visa status.  This process can take several months and there is no guarantee of approval.
