| Types of Tests: |
Placement Tests:
Students have the option of taking a paper-and-pencil test (ASSET) or
a computer-adaptive test (COMPASS) for admissions placement. Most students
need the complete test (English, reading, math). Depending on their math
score and program of study, some students may need one or two additional
algebra tests. The ASSET is a timed test; each section has a 25 minute
time limit. The COMPASS has no time limit. Since each student will be
started on The COMPASS on an individual basis some waiting may be required,
especially during the final days of testing each semester.
Just-One-Section ASSET: This testing opportunity
is restricted to students who wish to test or retest on only one section
of ASSET.
Computer Competency: The Computer Competency
Test is restricted to University Transfer, Associate in General Education,
OTA, ADN, Spanish Certificates, Pharmacy Tech and Respiratory Therapy
majors only. This test is only offered during Compass hours only, requires
90 minutes to complete, and may only be taken once.
Measure of Academic Proficiency and Progress (MAPP):
This online assessment is a new requirement for students applying for
graduation from degree programs only. The data will be used to assess
general learning outcomes for Durham Tech graduates. Graduation is NOT
dependent upon a certain score. Student GPAs are also NOT affected by
test scores.

| About Placement Testing: |
| Where: |
The Testing Center is located in the Phail
Wynn, Jr. Student Services Center on the third floor Room 1302. The
elevator is located in the main lobby of the building. The steps in the
main lobby area reach the 2nd floor only, proceed to either end of the
hall and use the stairs to access the 3rd floor. The ASSET and COMPASS
tests may be taken off-campus during scheduled
days. |
| What to Bring: |
Photo I.D., Social Security number (if you have one), and a #2 pencil.
Calculators will be supplied for students taking algebra tests. |
| When: |
As soon as possible. Testing rooms were filled to the maximum toward
the end of last term. Students may test only twice (either ASSET or COMPASS
or one of each). |
| What Time: |
The center will open at the times listed below for students to check
in and receive their testing materials. It is critical that students
arrive by the indicated check-in time. After check-in is complete,
test security standards require that no more students can be admitted
to the room. While waiting for check-in, students may line up or wait
in the student lounge directly across the hall. Testing is on
a first-come,first-served basis. |
| How Long: |
Testing will take approximately three and one-half hours for a complete
test. Plan for approximately 45 minutes per section for partial ASSET
tests. COMPASS testing is in a computer-adaptive, untimed format. Students
who do not complete testing in one session may return and finish at another
open-lab session. |
| Please note: |
Parents may not bring children to testing. Food and drink are not permitted
in the Testing Center. Cell phone and pagers must be turned off during
testing. |
| Review: |
To make your best possible score on ASSET or COMPASS,
review as much as possible before taking the test. You have several
review options:
- Take a look at Chart Your Success on the Compass, a helpful placement
test preparation guide that includes test-taking strategies and sample
questions. There are several copies on reserve in the Durham Tech
Library (main campus), or you can purchase your own copy at the Durham
Tech bookstore for $54.95.
