Admissions
Placement Testing
The COMPASS test is taken on the computer and
assesses writing, reading and basic math and algebra skills.
Since each student will be started on a test on an individual basis, some waiting may be required espcially during the final days of testing each semester. There is no time limit for this test.
The ASSET test is a 3-hour paper-and-pencil
assessment of writing, reading, basic math and algebra skills. The ASSET
is a TIMED TEST – each section has a 25-minute time limit. Seating is limited; early arrival
is recommended. Please arrive 30 minutes before testing in order to complete appropriate paperwork.
The Computer Competency Test is restricted to University Transfer,
General Education, Spanish Certificates, Associate Degree Nursing, Occupational
Therapy Assistant, Pharmacy Technology and Respiratory Therapy majors
only. The test focuses on basic computer skills including Microsoft
Word and Excel. The Computer Competency Test is offered during COMPASS
hours only, requires 90 minutes to complete, and may
only be taken once.
Measure of Academic Proficiency and Progress (MAPP) is an online assessment and is a new requirement for students applying for
graduation from degree programs only. The data will be used to assess
general learning outcomes for Durham Tech graduates. Graduation is NOT
dependent upon a certain score. Student GPAs are also NOT affected by
test scores.
The
Testing Center is located in the Phail
Wynn, Jr. Student Services Center on the third floor Room 1302.
The elevator is located in the main lobby of the building. The steps
in the main lobby area reach the 2nd floor only, proceed to either end
of the hall and use the stairs to access the 3rd floor. Please Note:
These are the hours the Testing Center is open. Since each student will
be started on a test on an individual basis, some waiting may be required-especially
during the final days of testing each semester. Please note that all
2007-2008 dates listed are tentative and are subject to change.

Registering for the Nurse Entrance Test (NET)
A student must pre-qualify to take the Nurse Entrance Test (NET) prior to signing-up for this examination. All developmental course work and basic biology (BIO-092) and chemistry (CHM-094) courses must be completed. When these courses are successfully completed, students should go to the Admissions office and fill-out a Nursing Entrance Test (NET) approval form. When the nursing admission counselors determine that a student is eligible to take the NET test, the student will be given information to register for the test. The cost of the NET test is $28.50 and registrations are non-refundable. Students will need to make arrangements to pay for the test when they register. The NET test takes between 2 ½ to 3 hours and students must arrive on time in order to begin the test. Students who arrive late will not be allowed to start the test. Seating is limited to 10 so register early to ensure a space. Students may take the NET test twice during a 12-month period. If a student takes the NET test more than twice in twelve months, only the first two attempts will be considered. Please contact the nursing admission counselors if you have additional questions regarding the NET test. Ms. Cleveland may be contacted at 919-686-3629 or clevelandi@durhamtech.edu or Ms. Brown at 919-686-3402 or browns@durhamtech.edu.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION: For admission to Durham
Tech, students may take either the ASSET or COMPASS version of the placement
test. Students may take the placement test a maximum of two times (ex.
ASSET twice, COMPASS twice, or ASSET once and COMPASS once). Requests
to take any part of the test a third time must be made in writing to
the Director of Admissions (form available in Admissions Office). Food
and drinks are not allowed in the Testing Center. All cell phones must
be turned off during testing. Children are not permitted in the Testing
Center. All testing is on a first-come, first-served basis. Seating
is limited; early arrival is advised. Applicants
must present a photo ID before taking the test. Please arrive
30 minutes before ASSET testing.
