Sociology Research Guide

The purpose of this guide is to help identify both print and electronic resources for encyclopedic, biographical, and statistical information concerning sociology terminology, themes, and concepts. Please ask a librarian for help with any research needs.

CQ Researcher (Congressional Quarterly Researcher)
(Located on Index table in Reference area)
A tool for researching current topics of interest. There are subject and title indexes. Each CQ issue thoroughly examines a particular topic and includes a bibliography of sources.
Example topics include: Religion in Schools, Gay Rights, Human Genome Research, Prisons, etc…

Information Plus
(Located on the Index table in the Reference area)
Each Information Plus volume contains articles and statistical information on a particular issue or topic. Example issues: American Family, Gun Control, Abortion, Capital Punishment, Social Welfare, Crime, Homelessness, etc…

Electronic Resources

Databases are for finding full text magazine and journal articles and can be accessed from the library or off campus, using a password from the library. The library subscribes to web-based databases for student and faculty use. For questions about databases, contact a librarian for assistance.

EBSCOhost Databases (available through NCLIVE)

MasterFILE Premier
Academic Search Elite

Although the EBSCOhost databases are general in scope and cover a wide variety of disciplines, they do provide access to many Sociology journals and full-text articles.

To Access: Click on "Other" search from the NCLIVE menu. Select EBSCOhost. Select each of the databases that you would like to search and then click enter.

Search Tip: Once inside the database search screen, to access only articles with full text click the box that says "full text" under limit search options. Use keyword searching to combine concepts using the word(s) "and."

Gale Databases (available through NCLIVE)

Gale InfoTrac Includes general academic databases that index journal and magazine articles relevant to sociology and social issues as well as a newspaper database. To Access: Click on "Other" search from the NCLIVE menu. Select Gale InfoTrac from the menu to enter the databases.

SIRS (Social Issues Resources Series)

A database for finding full text magazine and newspaper articles from the United States as well as internationally. Also includes government publications and documents.

Search Tip: The different ways to search within the database can be selected from a listing across the top of the screen including: quick search, advanced search, and topic browse. Results from the searches can be sorted by relevance or by date. The topic browse function includes topics such as family or human relations that can be further narrowed by choices listed.

Newsbank

A resource for finding full text newspaper articles from more than 500 United States Regional and National newspapers, wire services, and broadcasts.

Search Tip: To limit search results, select date limitations such as past three months, past six months, or all articles. A helpful listing of similar topics may appear to the left of the search results. These topics are linked to other articles that may be useful.
