Programs of Study
The main programs of study offered through the University Transfer program
include the Associate in Arts (A.A.) and Associate in Sciences (A.S.)
degrees. These degree programs are designed for students who wish to
complete 2 years of college and then transfer to four-year colleges
or universities to complete a baccalaureate degree.
How does a student decide between A.A. and A.S. programs?
The
Associate in Arts (A.A.) is a two-year degree with an emphasis
on courses such as English, fine arts, foreign languages, history, philosophy,
psychology, or sociology. The Associate in Science
(A.S.) is a two- year degree with an emphasis on courses such
as biology, chemistry, engineering, geology, mathematics, or physics.
Both of these programs prepare students for different majors at four-year
institutions. The A.A. degree is for liberal arts majors and the A.S.
is for science majors.
How does a student earn an A.A. or an A.S. degree?
Students need to complete the 44 Semester Hour General Education Core
plus 20 more hours of electives for a total of 64 hours. The specific
courses you choose will depend on your major and the school to which
you transfer.
What opportunities does Durham Tech offer students
besides the University Transfer program?
If you want to follow a structured academic curriculum, but have no
intention of pursuing a baccalaureate degree, the Associate
in General Education (A.G.E.) degree may best suit you.
If you are interested in technical or career training that will qualify
you for a specific job, one of our degree programs in Business
Technologies, Health Technologies, Public Service Technologies, or Industrial
and Engineering Technologies may suit you.
Pre-Major Agreements and Study Tracks
Students who have already selected the intended major for their college
degree should consult the more specific Pre-Major
Agreements and Study Tracks.
