The University Transfer program provides courses for the first two years of college so that you can transfer credits to a university and complete requirements for a bachelor's degree. The following information can be used as a guideline for preparing to transfer.

FIRST YEAR

Fall Semester

  • Meet with your advisor to select your courses for the semester.

  • Go to the www.CFNC.org web site for links to North Carolina colleges, their applications, and information about scholarships, grants and loans. This web site is maintained by the College Foundation of NC and has most of the information that you need to transfer successfully, such as majors offered, size of schools, locations.

  • Watch for recruiters from the various colleges who set up recruiting tables at Durham Tech. They have lots of information about universities and their requirements for admissions. Signs are often posted with information about the time and place that these recruiters will be on campus. Look for them.

  • If you are undecided about a major, begin exploring possible careers and a major field of study to match your career goals. Campus resource: Career Planning and Placement, White Building, room 23.

Spring Semester

  • Meet with your advisor to select your courses for the semester.

  • Do your research to select a university with your desired major.

  • Many universities have an "Open House" in the spring. Visit campuses to learn more about a particular university. Check out majors, admission requirements, and facilities.

  • Earn the best grades you can. Better grades may give you more choices of a major and a university.

  • Determine the requirements and course numbers needed for your particular major at the university.

SECOND YEAR

Fall Semester

  • Meet with your advisor to select your courses for the semester.

  • Select courses that are required for your major and for the university you expect to attend.

  • Check with the university that you are interested in attending for applications, deadlines, and follow up information from your college choices. We have provided links to many of the frequent choices for transfer.

  • Visit universities for additional information to make your choice.

Spring Semester

  • Meet with your advisor to select your courses for the semester.

  • Be very aware of deadlines. Some schools have December deadlines; others occur on March 1. Even for March deadlines, students usually need to begin submitting documents by January or February. A general rule is the earlier you apply, the better. If you are applying to a particular school within a university, such as a School of Education, it is often beneficial to send your application both to the Office of Admissions and to the School of Education. Some majors may require an earlier application, and some universities will take applications later than March. Check with the admissions office at the universities you wish to attend for their deadlines. Don't forget financial aid applications.

  • If you visit or interview with a university admissions officer, follow up with a thank you note.

  • Universities will look at your college record, the courses you take, and your grades as a part of the admissions process.

  • Graduate with an Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree.

Summer

  • Attend orientation for transfer students at your university.

Planning Your Move: Transferring

Planning can enhance a successful transfer to the university. The essential information you need about a university is majors offered, degree requirements, and transfer requirements. The following resources can provide information about your selected university.
