Please read on for answers to often-asked questions concerning the
LPN to ADN course of study at Durham Technical Community College.
|
| Is there a waiting list for prospective
LPN to ADN students? |
The LPN to ADN scheduling option admits in the Spring of even numbered
years (2006, 2008). The number of spaces varies but usually the number
accommodates the available applicants. When a waiting list does exist,
the student would most likely be admitted the next time the scheduling
option is offered (2 years). |
| How do I get started
in the admissions process? |
- Request the ADN packet from the admissions
office at the main campus on Lawson Street.
- Complete the admission application in the packet.
- Request official transcripts from high school or GED programs, and
colleges attended.
- Make an appointment to take the placement test (ASSET). Your scores
will determine where you will start with courses. Also, if you have
had high school biology and chemistry with a lab within the past five
years, you might receive credit for them. BIO 092 and CHM 094 will
fulfill this criteria if this requirement has not been met. You will
then qualify for inclusion on the waiting list for the program.

| Do I receive credit for my LPN education
and experience in Durham Technical Community College's ADN program? |
LPN's with unrestricted North Carolina licenses will receive credit
for NUR 110 and NUR 120A. Prior to beginning the Transition Course (NUR
189), students must complete BIO 168 and PSY 150. |
| What courses may I take while I am waiting
for admission acceptance? |
You may take any courses on the ADN plan of study without the NUR prefix.
We highly recommend this so that once you are admitted into the ADN program,
your course load will be lighter. |
| May I work while in College? |
Managing a work and college schedule is extremely demanding. The faculty
encourage students to plan ahead, arranging work hours to comprise no
more than 20 hours per week if possible. |
| When are Nursing classes scheduled? |
LPN to ADN nursing classes will be offered in the evening beginning
in the Spring of even numbered years (2006, 2008). |
| How long will it take to complete the
course requirements for the ADN program at Durham Technical Community
College? |
LPN's with an unrestricted North Carolina license are admitted in January
of each year into NUR 189, a transition course. A total of four semesters,
including a summer semester, is required to complete the program.
|
| Can I receive transfer credit at Durham
Technical Community College for college courses I have taken at other
institutions and apply these credits to the ADN plan of study? |
When you qualify for the acceptance list, admissions officers will evaluate
your prior course-work and assign transfer credit, if equivalent, to non-nursing
courses. |
| Are my courses in the ADN program transferable
to a university if I want to pursue a bachelor of science in nursing? |
Most definitely! Mobility/articulation plans are available for the Durham
Tech's ADN graduates. |
| Is financial aid available for ADN students? |
Yes, information about financial aid may be requested to be sent with
your admissions information packet or by calling 686-3660. |
