Please read on for answers to often-asked questions about the School-Age Education program at Durham Technical Community College.

Are specific scholarships or grants available to help me pay for this program?

Yes. The Teacher Assistant Scholarship Loan, or TSL, is available to all teacher assistants who have been working for at least one year as a full-time teacher assistant in a public/charter school in North Carolina. This scholarship provides $1,200 per year for up to four years. For complete guidelines and application information, go to http://www.dpi.state.nc.us/scholarships/taschol.htm on the Web. In addition, assistance is available through Durham Tech's Financial Aid Office.

Should I decide to become a teacher later in my career, will any of the course work in this program transfer to a four-year college?

Yes, come classes will transfer to four-year institutions. If you are considering this, please discuss your plans with your advisor at Durham Technical Community College.

Can I work on this degree while also working full time as a teacher assistant?

Yes. Classes are offered in the evenings and late afternoons to accommodate working individuals.

What about the Co-Op Work Experience I and II courses? Can I receive credit for these two courses while I am working as a teacher assistant?

Yes. It is possible to receive credit for Coop I and Coop II while working as a teacher assistant.

Are specific scholarships or grants available to help me pay for this program?

Yes. With the permission of your school's administration and your supervising teacher, a Durham Technical Community College faculty member will make regular visits and observations for these courses at your work setting.

Where is the School-Age Education program located?

Classes for the School-Age Education program are offered at Durham Tech's Northern Durham Center, located at 24001 Snowhill Road.

When is the Teacher Associate program offered?

The School-Age Education program is an afternoon and evening program which is convenient for working students.
