| What are the earnings for surgical technologists? |
Earnings vary with skill level and experience and in different parts of the United States. The average starting salary in the Triangle area range from $13-$14 per hour. Some medical institutions have higher pay scales for certified surgical technologists (CST's). Nationwide, salaries can range up to $30,000 annually based on the local job market.
|
| What are the working hours for surgical technologists? |
Surgical technologists work at least 40 hours per week in mostly day rotations. However, evening and weekend rotations are also available and may be required. Some health care facilities may require 10-hour or 12-hour workdays. In such cases, the surgical technologist works three to four days per week with additional time off.
|
| Where are surgical technologists employed? |
Surgical technologists usually work in hospital surgical units, same-day or ambulatory surgery units, labor and delivery units, or in sterile processing or supply departments. Some technologists can move onto careers in medical sales or education. With additional training, surgical technologists can become certified surgical technologist/first assistants (CST/FAs) who actually assist the surgeon during procedures.
|
| What education and training are required for a career as a surgical technologist? |
Surgical Technology education is available through postsecondary programs designed to develop expertise in surgical services. The majority of CSTs receive their education in accredited programs offered by community and junior colleges, vocational and technical schools, the military, universities, and structured hospital programs in surgical technology. The accredited programs vary from 9 to 15 months for a diploma or certificate and to 2 years for an associate degree.
|
| What personal qualifications are needed to become a surgical technologist? |
| As an essential part of the operating room team, certified surgical technologists must be able to work quickly and accurately, while at the same time be detail oriented. CST’s must be able to multitask and prioritize while in stressful and changing situations. Considerable patience and concern for order are required. Manual dexterity and physical stamina are vital. Sensitivity to the needs of the patient as well as other members of the surgical team must be demonstrated. Individuals who practice this profession have a strong desire to help others and make a valuable contribution to society. The Association of Surgical Technologists' motto is ager primo, which means "the patient first."
|
| Why become certified? |
| Certification for the surgical technologist is currently a voluntary process that helps determine, by examination, that an individual has met a national standard in both theoretical and practical knowledge in a particular field. Those who become certified demonstrate a commitment to maximum performance and quality patient care.
