Registration

Once the course schedule is available online, you may register at any time prior to the start of the course. Registration must be completed no later than 1 week prior to the course start. Courses failing to have 10 students enrolled by this date will be canceled.

If documentation and prerequisites are not complete prior to the start of the course, you may be removed from the course. The courses are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Anyone may register for you. The Public Safety registration form must be submitted for registration. Make sure that the person registering for you has the correct registration fees.


Course Descriptions

The American Heart Association (AHA) divides the CPR courses into two basic groups – Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers and Heartsaver.

Heartsaver®

AHA’s Heartsaver courses are for those with little or no medical training who need a course completion card for job, regulatory or other requirement.

These courses are delivered in a classroom setting by an AHA Instructor.

Heartsaver® First Aid

Heartsaver First Aid is a classroom, video-based, Instructor-led course that teaches students critical skills to respond to and manage an emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services (EMS) arrives. 4 hours. $55

Heartsaver® First Aid CPR AED

Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED is a classroom, video-based, Instructor-led course that teaches students critical skills needed to respond to and manage a first aid, choking or sudden cardiac arrest emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services (EMS) arrives.

Students learn skills such as how to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock and other first aid emergencies. This course also teaches adult CPR and AED use. 8 hours. $65

Heartsaver® CPR AED

This classroom course teaches basic CPR skills such as performing a head tilt-chin lift and giving compressions and breaths. The course provides training for anyone wh wants to learn basic CPR and obtain a Heartsaver course completion card. 4 hours. $55


Basic Life Support (BLS) Courses

The AHA’s BLS courses for healthcare providers and prehospital providers teach students how to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR to victims of all ages, use an AED and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner.

BLS courses are delivered in a classroom setting by an AHA Instructor.

BLS for Healthcare Providers

The classroom-based, Instructor-led BLS for Healthcare Providers Course teaches healthcare professionals the critical skills of high-quality CPR, to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner.

  • Initial Certification: 6 hours, $99
  • Renewal Certification: 4 hours, $79

Qualified public safety personnel may be eligible for a tuition waiver of $70.

HeartCode® BLS Part 2 & 3

HeartCode® BLS Part 1 is an online self-paced instructional program (purchased separately through www.onlineaha.org) that uses eSimulation technology to allow tudents to assess and treat patients in virtual healthcare settings. In this environment, students apply their knowledge to real-time decision making and skills development. Debriefings and coaching are provided immediately after each simulation to facilitate learning.

After completing the online portion of the course, students must practice (Part 2) and test their skills (Part 3) with an AHA BLS Instructor for full course completion.

Times are by appointment only and usually take 30 minutes to 1 hour. $15.


Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Courses

Medical professionals who respond to cardiovascular emergencies in and out of the hospital enhance their treatment knowledge and skills through the AHA’s ACLS training courses.

AHA’s ACLS offerings highlight the importance of team dynamics and communication, systems of care and immediate post---cardiac-arrest care. They also cover airway management and related pharmacology.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support

ACLS is an advanced, Instructor-led classroom course that highlights the importance of team dynamics and communication, systems of care and immediate post--cardiac-arrest care. It also covers airway management and related pharmacology. In this course, skills are taught in large, group sessions and small, group learning and testing stations where case-based scenarios are presented.

  • Initial Certification: 16 hours, $109
  • Renewal Certification: 6 hours, $89

Qualified public safety personnel may be eligible for a tuition waiver of $70

HeartCode® ACLS Part 2 & 3

HeartCode® ACLS Part 1 is an online self-paced instructional program that uses eSimulation technology to allow students to assess and treat patients in virtual healthcare settings. In this environment, students apply their knowledge to real-time decision making and skills development. Debriefings and coaching are provided immediately after each simulation to facilitate learning.

After completing the cognitive portion of the course, students must practice (Part 2) and test their skills (Part 3) with an AHA Instructor for full course completion.

Times are by appointment only and usually take 30 minutes to 1 hour. $20


Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Courses

AHA’s PALS course offerings are for healthcare providers who respond to emergencies in infants and children. The goal of the AHA’s PALS courses is to improve the quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured children, resulting in improved outcomes.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support

This classroom, video-based, Instructor-led course uses a series of simulated pediatric emergencies to reinforce the important concepts of a systematic approach to pediatric assessment, basic life support, PALS treatment algorithms, effective resuscitation and team dynamics. The goal of the Pediatric Advanced Life Support Course is to improve the quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured children, resulting in improved outcomes.

  • Initial Certification: 16 hours, $109
  • Renewal Certification: $89
  • Qualified public safety personnel may be eligible for a tuition waiver of $70.

    HeartCode® PALS Skills Evaluation

    HeartCode® PALS Part 1 is a web-based, self-directed program that teaches healthcare providers knowledge and skills needed to recognize and prevent cardiopulmonary arrest in infants and children.

    This program uses eSimulation technology to allow students to assess and treat patients in virtual healthcare settings. In this environment, students apply their knowledge to real-time decision-making and skills development. Debriefings and coaching are provided immediately after each simulation to facilitate learning about pediatric advanced life support.

    Times are by appointment only and usually take 1 to 2 hours. $30

    HeartCode® skills evaluations ARE NOT ELIGIBLE for tuition waiver.


    CPR/First Aid Course Requests

    Courses are offered based on demand. If you or your business are interested in hosting a CPR or First Aid course at your location, please email us at ems@durhamtech.edu, and we will respond within 72 hours during the work week. A minimum of 6 participants are required and we can accommodate a maximum of 24 participants per course.
