The Middle College High School at Durham Tech attracts students from all three public school systems. The students prefer the Middle College High School’s smaller classes, close individual attention from instructors, and flexible schedule. Students in the Middle College High School have the opportunity to take an assortment college courses that transfer to North Carolina universities.

The dual enrollment and Huskins Bill programs at Durham Tech provide excellent opportunities for qualified high school students who reside in Durham Tech’s service area of Durham and Orange counties to get a head start on their college courses. Huskins classes comprise the largest program for high school students at Durham Tech. Enacted in 1983 through the federal Huskins Bill, these college courses are taught in area high schools. Some recent course offerings include child development, blueprint reading, psychology, medical terminology, criminal justice, and automotive technology.

Many high school students come to a Durham Tech campus for college courses. Students 16 or older may take a class after adult students have had the opportunity to fill the seats. Students must be recommended by their principal and meet Durham Tech admission requirements. Dual-enrollment courses are also a popular draw for home-schooled students, many who go on to top universities. Private and charter school students also like the dual-enrollment programs because they expand the instructional offerings for these students.

Also, in support of public school instruction, Durham Tech works with service area school personnel to offer courses for educators to earn their required Continuing Education Units for professional development.
