The flagship building for Durham Tech’s Orange County satellite campus
will open its doors in 2008. Officials say the building is more than 50
percent complete. Located on 20 acres outside of the county seat of Hillsborough,
the campus is within the Waterstone development, a community of houses,
town homes, retail shops, and office space.
The $8.6 million two-story centerpiece building will total 40,000 square
feet. The exteriors of all future buildings on campus will conform to
the Hillsborough tradition of two shades of red brick. The new building
will contain three science labs, two computer labs, and five classrooms.
Energy-saving features proposed by the designers, Corley Redfoot Zack
of Chapel Hill, include solar panels, reflective ledges, and a rainwater
reclamation system. The campus has the capacity for four more buildings.
Many
English as Second Language (ESL) and computer classes currently held at
Orange County schools, churches, and recreation centers will be held on
the new campus. The campus will also be home to Durham Tech’s Emergency
Medical Services classes in Orange County. A variety of additional instruction
will also be offered. Approximately 25 percent of Durham Tech’s
total enrollment is from Orange County.
