The above plan of study is the standard curriculum for the above program. Any deviation from the prescribed curriculum must have approval in advance. All prerequisite course requirements must also be met. To graduate the student must successfully complete all the required courses, the required credit hours for electives, and have at least a 2.0 grade point average. This plan of study is subject to change when the college thinks such action is in the best interest of the student or the program. It is the responsibility of the student to meet requirements for graduation. If accepted students do not enroll for three successive semesters, they must contact the Admissions office to determine if readmission is necessary.

Note. This certificate provides many of the core classes required for the Infant/Toddler Child Development Associate (CDA: NCCC Track) and for the Pre-School Child Development Associate (CDA: NCCC Track)

Students who hope to obtain the Child Development Associate (CDA:NCCC Track) must

  • Have at least 480 hours experience working with children within the last five years
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Complete an abbreviated Professional Resource File
  • Earn a certificate in Pediatric First Aid
  • Take all of the required course work at a NC Community college required to earn either the Infant/Toddler CDA or Preschool CDA:
    • Infant/Toddler CDA requires EDU 119, EDU 144, EDU 153, EDU 131, EDU 234 (courses on this certificate) , as well as EDU 184 Early Child Introduction Practicum (1-3-2)
    • Preschool CDA requires EDU 119, EDU 144, EDU 153, EDU 131 (courses on this certificate), as well as EDU 145 Child Development II (3-0-3), EDU 146 Child Guidance (3-0-3), and EDU 184 Early Childhood Introduction Practicum.

An official certificate for the CDA is not awarded by Durham Technical Community College. Students must apply for the CDA through the Child Care Services Association (919-967-3272).
