As part of the college’s reaffirmation of accreditation process, the college is reviewed for compliance with a set of core requirements and comprehensive standards and develops a Quality Enhancement Plan for implementation over the years ahead. The QEP should describe a carefully designed and focused course of action that addresses a well-defined issue or issues directly related to improving student learning.
With significant participation by the college's academic community, the QEP Lead Team has constructed the following QEP focus:
Graduates of Durham Technical Community College programs will demonstrate the ability to send and receive audience-specific communications.
We have identified two learning outcomes:
I. As the sender, the graduating student will generate respectful communications that have a clear purpose and are well organized, grammatically correct, and appropriate to the audience and mode of communication.
II. As the receiver, the graduating student will accurately interpret and respond to communications with regard to the sender, mode of delivery, and nonverbal cues.
Why is QEP important?
The Durham Technical Community College community recognizes that in order to be truly successful in the twenty-first century, graduates must be adaptable to ever-changing communication media and an ever-diversifying audience.
Focusing on students' communication skills will help the college's faculty and staff address concerns by local employers. In addition, it provides the opportunity to bring one aspect of Durham Tech's instructional Vision for a Learning College, adopted in 2004, to greater fruition: ”developing demonstrable improvements in student learning outcomes in both written and oral communication skills.”
