Service Learning Plans at Durham Tech

Durham Tech is in the very early stages of its service learning work. While many instructors have incorporated service and civic engagement into their courses to varying degrees, few are reaping the benefits of fully-realized service learning experiences. This distinction between community service and service learning is important because the benefits to students and the community greatly increase through structured service learning methods.

Information about tentative plans follows. Please check back for updates about developments.

Spring 2012
A small, closed pilot limited to faculty participating in the Fall 2011 service learning training is being undertaken to provide feedback on current policies and procedures for curriculum courses, including risk-management measures, student orientations, and assessment surveys.

Summer 2012
Administrative work informed by the first pilot will be completed. Training activities and support for faculty, information for students, and important materials and documents will be revised based on feedback from the spring pilot.

Fall 2012
A larger pilot will be undertaken with the instructors who completed spring 2012 or fall 2011 service learning training. Developed service learning materials, policies, and procedures will be further assessed.
