Vice President of Student Learning, Development, and Support Job Description March 2008

Reports To:    President

Duties and Responsibilities:

To promote student access, success, and persistence by providing senior leadership, direction, and coordination of all academic and student services.  More specifically, the duties and responsibilities are as follows:

  1. Provide vision and direction in developing, implementing, assessing, and revising strategic plans for policies and procedures that advance the college’s mission and goals to support a diverse body of students as they pursue their educational goals;
  2. Lead the formulation and implementation of annual and long-range plans for instructional and student services, including budget development, program planning, and assessment activities;
  3. Coordinate and resolve student grievances and the administration of disciplinary procedures in accordance with college policies and procedures;
  4. Supervise the coordination of credit course offerings, class schedules, and student enrollment services, including registration and advising activities in accordance with the mission and goals of the college;
  5. Direct assessment activities for instructional and student support services, including student evaluations in accordance with the Vision for a Learning College;
  6. Recommend budget allocations to the President for all instructional and student services departments and ensure the proper expenditures of allocated funds;
  7. Provide leadership for all credit programs and student services that fosters a college environment in which all students can learn;
  8. Serve as the Chief Instructional and Student Services Officer;
  9. Interpret and analyze pertinent educational laws, legislation, policies, regulations, and procedures to ensure compliance and accurate reporting;
  10. Develop, monitor, and maintain effective enrollment management and retention processes and procedures; and
  11. Additional duties as assigned by the President.

Required Minimum Qualifcations:

  1. Terminal degree in discipline or program area offered by the college or master’s degree in discipline or program area offered by the college and additional graduate work in higher education or community college leadership, education, student development, or a related education field;
  2. Evidence of successful college teaching experience in a community college or university credit program;
  3. Five years of upper-level leadership experience in a community college setting, including both instructional leadership and leadership in providing student services or support;
  4. Evidence of effective program development in instructional areas and student services for at-risk and non-traditional students, including minority, low-income, international, and first-generation college students;
  5. Excellent interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and effective oral and written communication/public relations skills;
  6. Excellent computer skills and evidence of having used technology effectively for program improvement; and
  7. Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the philosophy, mission, and purpose of the North Carolina Community College System.

Normal Working Hours :

    A 40-hour work week established to adequately fulfill the assigned duties and responsibilities. Occasional evening and weekend hours will be required. During special events, work hours for any particular day may be changed.
