The Trauma Life Support Course is designed to increase the knowledge and skill level of the emergency medical technician in assessing and treating any trauma-related injury. Much of the material in this course is not covered in the initial EMT or EMT-1 course. EMS-3105A PALS Instructor
American Heart Association's Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Course is an intensive course for instructor candidates who have already successfully completed the PALS Provider Course. The PALS Instructor Course uses a variety of teaching methods and adult learning principles in an environment that will mimic a real healthcare setting (eg, back of an ambulance, emergency department bed). From an educational perspective, the closer the simulated emergency is to a real-life case (eg, setting, equipment), the better the transfer of skills. Cognitive, psychomotor, and some affective domains will be accomplished through small-group teaching and case scenario practice on a manikin as a Team Leader and team members and the use of large- or small-group short video presentations with instructor-student interaction. Pre-requisite's include current AHA PALS Provider card and completion of AHA PALS Instructor Essentials Online course. This in-person course is one of the final steps to becoming an AHA PALS Instructor. Upon completion, the candidate must be monitored within the following 6 months. EMS-4100A Emergency Medical Responder Initial
This course must follow the guidelines established by the NC Office of EMS. The Office of EMS must approve courses that include portions delivered via distance education. The curriculum for the EMR educational program shall be the 2009, or most current release of the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) National Education Standards. The EMR program must be conducted by an approved Basic or Advanced Educational Institution as defined in the rules of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission. The lead instructor for the EMR educational program must be a NC credentialed Level I EMS Instructor at the EMT, AEMT or Paramedic level as defined in the rules of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission. Student/Course prerequisites: A) 17 years of age on or before the official end date of the course; B) High school diploma or high school equivalent; or successful completion of an entrance exam assessing basic reading comprehension skills at a minimum of the tenth grade level.

The EMT Continuing Education program must be conducted by an approved Basic or Advanced Educational Institution as defined in the rules of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission. All Continuing Education Programs will at a minimum, meet or exceed the National Continued Competency Program (NCCP) established by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. EMS-4200A Emergency Medical Technician Initial
This course establishes the basic knowledge needed to provide, under medical authority, prehospital emergency care and to pass the NC State or National Registry certification exam. Students will acquire basic life support knowledge through a combination of classroom instruction, practical laboratory exercises, field time with an EMS agency, and clinical experience in hospitals. Students will acquire a thorough understanding of criminal, civil, and vehicle laws pertaining to the EMT's services; develop understanding and knowledge of human anatomy and physiology; deal calmly and efficiently with childbirth, injuries, poisonings, and other medical emergencies such as heart disorders, strokes, and diabetes; and in general be able to provide basic life support for seriously/critically ill patients.
