Are book clubs cool? Want to join one?

I think the real question is– do we care if book clubs are cool?

No. No, we do not care because we’re beyond doing what other people think is “cool” and are more interested in doing things that bring us joy and help us explore ideas with openness and curiosity.

Plus sometimes there be dragons.

The Durham Tech Library is gathering data for faculty and staff reading groups. Take our survey and let us know what types of books and reading groups you’d be interested in joining and if you’d be interested in facilitating a session. Keep an eye out for more information about upcoming reading circles, too.

We’re interested in student feedback, too, though we won’t start any student reading groups until Fall 2023, depending on interest and staffing (so plan ahead!). Are you part of a student group that would like to do a book club or reading circle? Let us know!

New Graduates & Starting Summer Session

ConGRADulations to our 2022 Durham Tech graduates!

Over 350 people earned their degrees, diplomas, and certificates during Durham Tech’s 60th Commencement Ceremony at the Durham Bull’s Athletic Park last Wednesday, May 18.

2021 MacArthur Fellow and 2002 Durham Tech alumnus Ibrahim Cissé delivered the commencement speech (embedded below; link to YouTube video).

Food Facts for Library Fest!

Join us on Thursday, April 21 from 12:30-2:00 PM in the Wynn Building Multipurpose Room for Taste & See, where you will get to taste delicious food made by Durham Tech’s own Culinary Program, learn fun food history facts, and even check out a cookbook to take home from the Durham Tech Library’s cookbook collection!

Taste & See-- Library Fest: The Food Edition. Food tasting and food history program. April 21, 2022 from noon to 2pm in the Wynn Multipurpose Room (Building 10)

Food while supplies last. This event is a collaboration between Durham County Library’s Library Fest, Durham Tech’s Culinary Program, Durham Tech Library, and the Viva the Arts Committee.

We hope to see you there!

Durham County Public Library’s Library Fest has exciting events planned for adults, teens, and children the week of April 18, about food, agriculture, and culinary history of the South.

Registration is required, but free tickets are available for the keynote events with Vivian Howard, award-winning cookbook author, tv personality, chef and restaurateur, and Michael W. Twitty, culinary historian, and food writer.

Virtual and in-person events throughout the week include programs on local mushroom foraging, community gardens, history of Durham restaurants, science of coffee, soil health, backyard chickens, and much more!

Durham Tech’s First Virtual Open House

The 3-hour event will take place on Wednesday, June 2 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm and will provide information on College Admission, Financial Aid, Career Services, Student Support Services, and various other areas of the college. Following the Open House, the College will have virtual booths open for additional questions and information for specific Durham Tech departments.

Durham Tech Food Pantry– Donate on behalf of your colleagues, friends, or just because

Give the gift of giving! Show your colleagues you care by donating on their behalf to the Campus Harvest Food Pantry. A $25 gift provides 5 students with a large grocery bag of food and a bag of fresh produce. A $50 gift provides a 6-serving frozen family meal to 6 students. A $100 gift provides a large bag of groceries, fresh produce, a frozen family meal. and personal and household hygiene items for up to 7 students. A $250 gift provides a large bag of groceries, fresh produce, a frozen family meal, personal and household hygiene items, kid-friendly snacks, and diapers to 15 students.

The Durham Tech Campus Harvest Food Pantry has launched the Give the Gift of Giving campaign. Durham Tech employees, show your co-workers that you are thinking of them this holiday season by making an online gift to the food pantry on their behalf.

To participate in the Gift of Giving campaign, complete the Foundation’s Online Giving Form and put your colleague’s name in the Tribute Information box. In the Additional Information comment box, indicate if you would prefer that your colleague receive a festive mailed letter or email to inform them that you have contributed to the food pantry on their behalf.

Want to donate on behalf of someone who is not a Durham Tech employee?
Complete the Foundation’s Online Giving Form and put your someone’s name in the Tribute Information box. In the Additional Information comment box, indicate if you would prefer that they receive a festive mailed letter or email to inform them that you have contributed to the food pantry on their behalf. Make sure to include their mailing or email address in the Additional Information box.

Durham Tech Virtual Crafternoon: Paper Stars!

It’s time for another virtual Crafternoon! Crafternoons are a partnership between the Durham Tech Student Government Association and the Library.

Today, I’ll walk through how to make paper stars, which–depending on the size of paper you use– can be used as a decorative wreath or just decoration. Heck, if you want to make a lot of them, you can even make a paper star garland! 

Do you want six pages of scrapbook paper to make your own paper star wreath? We have some scrapbook paper kits available for current students to pick up at the Main Campus Library. Request your paper through our Wufoo form– current students only, please.

It’s Election Day!

Happy Election Day 2020! 

Today is the last day to cast your vote! Join your Durham Tech community and cast your vote if you’re eligible and haven’t already!

In order to vote today, you’ll need to go to your assigned polling place and can vote until 7:30 p.m.– if you’re in line at 7:30 p.m., no matter how long the line may be, you can cast your ballot. Learn more from the NC State Board of Elections about what to expect when voting on Election Day, including links to download a sample ballot.

No ID is required. 

As a voter, you have rights! Here’s a concise list from Democracy NC about your Voter’s Bill of Rights. (Also available in Spanish.) Remember that voter intimidation is against both state and federal law. Report any instances of voter intimidation to the election official at your polling place 

If you’d like to drop off your Vote-by-Mail/Absentee Ballot in person, you can do so on Election Day at your county’s Board of Elections office by 5:00 p.m. All ballots sent through the mail must be postmarked by Nov. 3 and received by Nov. 12. 

Unfortunately, if you have not registered to vote, you can no longer do so, but if you have registered and your name is not found at your polling place, you have the right to complete a provisional ballot.
